The majority of the Phillies players are members of the Adelaide Giants.  The Giants defeated Melbourne two games to one to advance to next week’s championship series.  They will play Perth in a re-match of last year’s championship round, Perth defeated Brisbane 5-4 in the third game of their series to advance.

1/28 : Adelaide 2 (2-1) Melbourne 1 (1-2)

Second baseman Kendall Simmons made an outstanding play ranging far up the middle of the diamond on a hard hit ground ball and throwing out the batter at first base!  It was one of multiple strong defensive plays by Adelaide.  Cade Fergus went 2 for 3 in the game while Rixon Wingrove was 2 for 4.  Andrick Nava had a single in three at bats.  LHP Braeden Fausnaught pitched two scoreless innings (2 H, 1 K - 27 pitches - 22 strikes) in relief.  Former Phillies minor leaguers Robbie Glendenning (he was 3 for 3 in the game), Chris Burke and Mitchell Edwards played for Melbourne.

1/27 : Adelaide 3 (1-1) Melbourne 2 (1-1)

Cade Fergus hit a seventh inning home run to break a 2-2 tie. The knock held up to be the game winner and tie the series.  Cade’s hit was one of the three Adelaide produced in the game with doubles by Rixon Wingrove and Kendall Simmons being the others.  Former Phillies RHP Austin Ross pitched a scoreless eighth inning striking out two batters.

1/26 : Melbourne 3 (1-0) Adelaide 2 (0-1)

First game in best of three series - #4 seed Melbourne was victorious.  LHP Lachlan Wells pitched seven innings for Adelaide (1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 K’s - 88 pitches - 65 strikes).  Former Phillies minor league RHP Austin Ross pitched a scoreless and hitless inning (1 BB, 1 K).  Adelaide was held to five hits - Andrick Nava doubled and Cade Fergus singled.

Domincan Professional Baseball League :

1/27 :  Tigres del Licey prevailed 3-2 over Estrellas Orientales in the seventh and deciding game of the league championship series.  It’s the 24th title in the history of the storied franchise. “They became the first team to repeat titles since the Leones del Esgido did so in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 campaigns.  Licey had not won consecutive titles since 1982-83, when they won three successive crowns starting that campaign.” - quotes taken from league article written by Carlos Sanchez.

Venezuela Professional Baseball League :

1/27 : The Cardenales de Lara forced a sixth game in the championship series by defeating Tiburones de La Guaira 6-5.  Tiburones de La Guaira now leads the series three games to one.  Former Phillie Odubel Herrera went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk for the Cardenales and scored twice in the game.   The two teams will play again today with former Phillies RHP Ricardo Pinto slated to start for the Tiburones.

Caribbean Series :

The 2024 Caribbean Series will be held this year in Miami, Florida from February 1st thru February 9th.  This will be the first time since 1991 that the series will be played outside of Latin America and the very first time it will be played in a major league stadium - LoanDepot Park.

“The series will bring together the champions of seven professional baseball leagues - Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Curaçao, Nicaragua and Panama. A single round-robin format will be used; each team will face each other once. The four teams with the best records will advance to the semifinals. The two losers will meet in the third place match and the two winners will meet in the final to decide the tournament champion. ” - Wikipedia

The defending champion is Tigres del Licey from the Dominican Republic.  They will play against  Naranjeros de Hermosillo (Mexico), Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico), Federales de Chiriqui (Panama), Gigantes de Rivas (Nicaragua), Curacao Suns (Curacao) and either Tiburones de La Guaira or Cardenales de Lara (Venezuela).
