1/7/23 : News & Notes - Soto Trade

Updated: Jan 18, 2023

Dave Dombrowski just met with the media via a zoom call regarding the big trade today.

He said that the Phillies had discussed Gregory Soto with the Tigers at the Winter Meetings but that a deal couldn’t be reached.  The Phillies did not pursue it further however the Tigers reached out to the Phillies this Thursday and talks resumed reaching a trade conclusion today - came together quickly the last couple of days.

Soto adds another option that can pitch in the late innings of games - with his addition the club feels they have at least seven hurlers who can hold leads and close out games. Soto is currently pitching winter league baseball - I will now include him in my winter league updates 🤓.

Dalton Guthrie is considered by the organization as someone who can assume the role of fourth outfielder now vacated by Matt Vierling.  Mr D said Guthrie’s opening day role has been potentially solidified by the deal as they are confident he can play the outfield as well as filling in the infield as needed.

In further regards to center field he said that Brandon Marsh is considered an everyday player by the organization and will play against left handed pitchers.  Dalton Guthrie could get time on occasion in center field against left handers - Johan Rojas is ready now defensively but they feel he needs further development in the minor leagues offensively.  Simon Muzziotti is healthy and provides depth as well - also a very good defender.

He spoke about Kody Clemens who was also acquired from the Tigers - the organization likes his bat and defensive versatility and see him as a player who potentially can help in a reserve role - said Clemens can play second base, both corner infield spots as well as both corner outfield spots and has some pop in his bat.

They designated RHP Francisco Morales earlier this week because the club felt they were deeper in relievers than starters and that Francisco has struggled with both control and command.  He said the 40 man roster is very deep overall now and that as a result good players become available when moves are made.  He mentioned that there are minor league relievers presently not on the 40 man roster such as McKinley Moore that the club thinks could help at the big league level at some point this season if the need arises.

In regards to potential other moves he stated that the club is confident with the players on the roster they have to fill out the reserve roles but if an opportunity arises they could possibly add someone - that the Phillies are now particularly deep in relievers ( both majors and minors ) and hypothetically that might be an area of strength to make a move from if needed.

Good stuff 🤓

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
