11/19/21 : Phillies Add LHP Kent Emanuel

Kent Emanuel was claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros. He’s 29 years old and was the Astros 3rd round draft selection in the 2013 draft out of the University of North Carolina. He appeared in 10 major league games this season posting a 2.55 ERA with 13 K’s and 4 walks in 17 2/3 innings before being placed on the injured list at the end of May with elbow soreness. Subsequently he underwent surgery to fix the ulnar collateral ligament which ended his season. He had previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2015. He’s expected to return to action perhaps as early as spring training in 2022.

Emanuel is a sinker ball pitcher who also has a slider and change up. The sinker generally is in the 90-92 range with the changeup hovering at 84 mph and the slider around 78 mph. The slider generates a lot of spin and movement. His greatest asset is pitch ability and command. He’s 6’4” 225 lbs and has a career minor league ERA of 4.77 in 136 games ( 532 IP ) with 422 K’s and 136 walks.
