3/16/21 : Grapefruit League Game Sixteen



Game Summary : Blue Jays 14 Phillies 5


Lourdes Gurriel Jr singled to score Vladimir Guerrero ( doubled ) in the Jays second inning.


Toronto scored three runs in the third inning on four hits and a walk. Key blows were doubles by Teascor Hernandez and Guerrero.


The Blue Jays scored two runs in the fourth, one on an RBI double by Randal Grinchuk.


The Phillies loaded the bases with no outs in their fourth on two walks ( Bryce Harper and Ronald Torreyes ) and a single ( Alec Bohm ). Jean Segura then laced a ball that bounced over the left field fence but he was called out by the first base umpire for passing Torreyes while rounding first base ... thus a double turned into a single. Andrew Knapp then hit a sac fly to right field to score Torreyes.


The Blue Jays scored three times in the fifth. Alec Bohm made a throwing error allowing Teoscar Hernandez to reach. He scored on a single by Cavan Biggio. Biggio scored on a double by Randal Grinchuk. Danny Jansen doubled to score Grinchuk.


Marcus Semien led off the sixth for Toronto with a home run. Vladimir Guerrero Jr got his fourth hit of the day, a triple off the center field fence to score two more Blue Jays runs. 🤪. Cavin Biggio singled to score Guerrero.


Matt Vierling hit a two run home run for the Phillies in the seventh inning.


Toronto scored another run in the ninth on three hits.


On The Hill : Blue Jays had 21 hits today 😳


Aaron Nola ( FB 92-94 ) struggled with his location early and got hit pretty hard. He was tagged for four runs on six hits and a walk and struck out one batter in the first 2 2/3 IP. It happens, no worries 🤓. Aaron was lifted in the third frame but re-entered the game in the fourth inning ( ST rules ) ... he gave up another run on a walk and double. Just didn’t have it today ... it happens, no worries. 70 pitches - 47 strikes


Julian Garcia ( FB 92 ) retired the only batter he faced to end the third inning.


Jonathan Hennigan ( FB 91-93 ) allowed an inherited run to score. He yielded a single and walk but got a DP grounder to get out of a bases loaded jam.


Brandon Kintzler ( FB 90-92 ) struggled for the first time this spring. He yielded three runs on four hits in one inning pitched. Struck out one batter. 19 pitches - 14 strikes.


Tony Watson ( FB 91-92 ) only recorded one out in the sixth inning and was tagged for four runs on five hits, also his first struggle of the spring. 23 pitches - 18 strikes for Watson.


Michael Ynoa ( FB 92-93 ) recorded the final two outs of the sixth inning.


Sam Coonrad ( FB 96-98 ) yielded a hit but no runs in a scoreless seventh inning. He struck out two batters. Another batter reached on an error.


Bryan Mitchell ( FB 94-96 ) tossed a perfect eighth inning.


Jo Jo Romero ( FB 94-97 ) was tagged for a run on three hits in one inning pitched. He struck out two batters.



At The Plate : six hits today


Ronald Torreyes walked and doubled in three plate appearances. Matt Vierling hit a two run home run & Jean Segura had two RBIs.

Doubles : Andrew McCutchen ( left fielder lost fly ball in sun ), Ronald Torreyes


Home Run : Matt Vierling


Defensive Gems :


Andrew McCutchen made a long running catch on a sinking liner to end the third inning.


Catcher Andrew Knapp picked off Guerrero wandering too far off first base in the fifth inning.


Curious Things 🤦‍♂️:


The Blue Jays played a defense of four outfielders vs Rhys Hoskins leaving the second base position vacant.


Phil-Ins :


Mini Camp players on the roster today included pitchers Enyel De Los Santos, Jonathan Hennigan and Julian Garcia, Catchers Edgar Cabral and Logan O’Hoppe, Infielders Luis Garcia, Darick Hall and Bryson Stott and Outfielders Matt Vierling and Johan Rojas.


Grapefruit League record is now 7-8-1


Next :


After the game today the Phillies optioned Infielder CJ Chatham to mini camp.


Phillies are back at BayCare Ballpark vs the Tigers tomorrow.
