3/9/21 : Grapefruit League Game Nine

My wife Barb and I were in attendance today in Dunedin. Nice sunny day in the upper 70’s, when we attend games in Dunedin we always try to purchase third base line section 212 and rows 14 and up ... always in the shade 😎.

Game Summary : Blue Jays 4 Phillies 1 - nine innings

Toronto scored twice in the bottom of the second inning on a bases loaded single and a throwing error which allowed the second run to score.

The Blue Jays scored their third run in the sixth inning on a double, walk and sac fly. A fourth run scored on a single that Scott Kingery just barely missed making a spectacular diving catch on.

Mickey Moniak tripled in the 8th inning and scored on a bloop double by Nick Maton.

On The Hill :

Vince Velasquez ( 92-94 mph FB ) had a perfect first inning but ran into command issues in his second frame and was lifted with the bases full and two outs. He issued two walks and yielded a single ... 39 pitches - 19 strikes. He struck out three batters.

Enyel De Los Santos ( 93-94 mph FB ) yielded an inherited run on a single that hit the umpire, a hard grounder towards second base. The ball deflected and was thrown to first by second baseman CJ Chatham but errantly however Rhys Hoskins retrieved it and tagged out the runner as he rounded the bag and attempted to get back to first base 😳. A second run scored on the errant throw. It was the only batter Enyel faced.

Matt Moore ( 91-95 mph FB ) mixed his pitches well along with location in two scoreless innings allowing just one single. Looks like a fella who knows how to pitch and has stuff to go with it. 💪

Connor Brogdon ( 92-96 mph FB ) had another dominant outing ... perfect frame with one strikeout ... just 10 pitches - 8 strikes.

Hector Neris ( 92-94 mph FB ) yielded two runs on a single, double, walk and sac fly in 2/3 of an inning of work. 20 pitches - 11 strikes.

David Hale finished the sixth inning by retiring the only batter he faced in the frame on a 5-3 groundout.

Archie Bradley ( 92-94 mph FB ) threw a scoreless inning yielding two singles.

Jose Alvarado ( 96-99 mph FB ) tossed a perfect inning. Big arm 💪🔥

At The Plate : the Phillies were limited to four hits

Mickey Moniak tripled in the eighth inning. Nick Maton scored him with a double.

Matt Vierling hit a rocket that the right fielder made a diving catch on.

Alec Bohm and Luis Garcia singled.

Defensive Notes :

Rhys Hoskins played first base today for the initial time this spring.

Right Fielder Odubel Herrera made a long running catch in foul territory where he ran from right center field and caught a pop up Willie Mays basket style against the fence along the right field seating area. He called off first baseman Rhys Hoskins to make the catch ... an all out hustle play !

CJ Chatham made a couple nice plays on hard hit grounders at second base showing range to both his left and right sides.

Phil-Ins :

Mini Camp players on the roster today included pitchers Jonathan Hennigan, Enyel De Los Santos and for the first time Zach Warren, Catchers Logan O’Hoppe and Edgar Cabral, Infielders Luke Williams, Luis Garcia, Darick Hall and Bryson Stott and Outfielders Odubel Herrera, Matt Vierling and Johan Rojas.

Grapefruit League record is now 3-5-1

Next :

Phillies are back at BayCare Ballpark tomorrow versus the Tigers.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
