4/26/21 : The Winning slots

Updated: Apr 27

We are 21 games into the Phillies season and the team record is 10-11 ... by my count the first three spots in the rotation are 8-5 in team wins/losses while slots 4 and 5 are 2-6.

Here’s the breakdown by slot in team wins and losses ...

Slot One - Nola - 4-1

Slot Two - Wheeler - 1-3

Slot Three - Eflin - 3-1

Slot Four - Moore/Velasquez - 2-2

Slot Five - Anderson - 0-4

For comparison I reviewed the eight teams that have winning percentages of .571 or better ( Athletics, Dodgers, Giants, Brewers, Red Sox, Royals, White Sox and Mariners ). The averages for each slot amongst the seven clubs are as follows ... some teams have played more than 21 games, one has played 20. The averages are pretty consistent for each starting slot.

Slot One - 3-2

Slot Two - 3-2

Slot Three - 2-2

Slot Four - 3-1

Slot Five - 3-2

The winning clubs have gotten an average of 8 wins out of their top three rotation slots ... the Phillies are spot on that number. The back end of the winning club’s rotations have produced an average of 6 wins ... the Phillies have just two in total from those slots.

Here’s some more data to ponder 🤔 ....

The Dodgers have the best overall winning percentage in baseball with a record of 15-7 ... their five starting pitching slots break down as follows :

Slot One - Kershaw - 3-2

Slot Two - Bauer - 3-2

Slot Three - Buehler - 3-1

Slot Four - Urias - 4-0

Slot Five - May - 2-2

The Giants have had the most top heavy rotation success of the winning clubs so far ... their record of 14-8 breaks down as follows :

Slot One - Gausman - 3-2

Slot Two - Cueto/Wood - 5-0

Slot Three - Webb - 3-1

Slot Four - DeSciafani - 2-2

Slot Five - Sanchez - 1-3

The Mariners have the most evenly distributed success in the slots amongst the winning teams thus far ... they are 13-9 and have used six starting slots early on.

Slot One - Gonzales - 2-2

Slot Two - Kikuchi - 2-2

Slot Three - Flexen - 3-1

Slot Four - Sheffield -3-1

Slots Five & Six - Paxson/Dunn/Margevicius - 3-3

Just some numbers ...

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
