5/9/21 : Week Five Minor League Review ( 5/3 to 5/8 )

Writer's picture: Steve PotterSteve Potter

Position Players :

Lehigh Valley :

IF Yairo Munoz - 27 years old from Nagua, Dominican Republic- he went 7 for 14 (.500) for the week in Syracuse including a four hit game on 5/5. He’s off to a great start to his season with a .346 batting average and .370 OBP in 20 games ( 78 AB’s ). Yairo has brought a solid glove, enthusiasm and love of the game to the organization and it’s infectious. Signed as a minor league free agent on 2/1/22 from the Boston Red Sox organization he was originally signed by the Oakland A’s in 2012 and has now played with four organizations ( A’s, Cardinals, Red Sox & Phillies ). Yairo has played in 213 major league games with the Cardinals and Red Sox and has a .274 batting average in 521 AB’s.

SS Bryson Stott - 24 years old from Las Vegas, NV - when he was optioned to the minors on 4/25/22 skipper Joe GIrardi advised him to continue to play hard, not sulk and to push his way back to the show. Bryson did just that going 5 for 13 this week in Syracuse and 12 for 36 overall in nine games with LHV. An unfortunate injury to Didi Gregorius opened an opportunity for the well regarded young man and he’s back for a second stint in the big leagues. Great to see his effort and work ethic pay off.

C Austin Wynns - 31 years old from San Diego, CA - went 7 for 13 (.538 ) for the week including 2 home runs and 8 RBIs. The veteran receiver has been a steadying presence for the Iron Pigs. Known primarily for his defensive skills he’s posted a .350 batting average in 40 AB’s in the early going as the back-up catcher. With Donny Sands incurring an apparent injury during Saturday’s game Mr Wynns may see more extensive action behind the dish.

Reading :

1B Josh Ockimey - 26 years old from Philadelphia, PA - went 6 for 23 during the week with a double, 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. He had a two home run game on 5/7 and 5 RBIs in the contest. Signed as a minor league free agent on 2/14/22 from the Red Sox organization - he was Boston’s 5th round draft selection in the 2014 draft form Neumann Goretti High School in Philadelphia.

Jersey Shore :

OF Jared Carr - 22 years old from Martinsburg, WV - went 3 for 10 ( .300 ) during the week. The 2021 13th round draft selection from Shepherd University in West Virginia hit .277 last season in 101 AB’s with Low A Clearwater.

Clearwater :

IF Hao Yu Lee - 19 years old from New Taipei, Taiwan - he went 7 for 20 ( .350 ) during the week against Dunedin and provided spark and passion for his teammates. He was hit by a pitch both Friday and Saturday night and teammates rallied around him. In the game Saturday he answered back with a resounding triple off the left field wall and when reaching third base pointed to his dugout and yelled, showing more emotion than we’ve seen to date from the young man. It was an inspiring and bonding moment for the team. This kid can play - now has a solid .295 batting average in 88 AB’s with 4 doubles, a triple and home run. He’s also drawn 10 walks and has a .380 OBP. Defensively he’s solid - continues to remind me of Placido Polanco with his game.

OF Yhoswar Garcia - 20 years old from Guatire, Venezuela - went 6 for 18 ( .333 ) for the week and stole 6 bases giving him 20 for the season. He had a double, triple and home run and played excellent defense in center field. The young man is fun to watch and can flat out fly, covers a great amount of territory in the outfield.

IF Alexeis Azuaje - 20 years old from Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela - went 6 for 16 ( .375 ) for the week with 2 doubles and 3 stolen bases raising his season’s average to .271 in 17 games ( 59 AB’s ). He’s yet another exciting young hitter on the Clearwater roster that has started to feel more comfortable and as a result has started to do well. We saw him on the backfields the past couple seasons, he can swing the bat and is a versatile defender in the infielder.
