6/9/22 : Florida Complex League/Dominican Summer League Roundup

Florida Complex League :

Phillies 7 ( 2-1 ) Yankees 6 ( 2-1 )

Summary :

The Yankees plated two runs in the third inning on a triple, single and double. In the middle of that was a relatively late balk call on Starlyn Castillo when the batter actually hit the pitch into a groundout however the play was ruled dead and instead a ball was called with the runner on first advancing to second base. We’ve seen quite a few balk calls in games this season 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️.

The Phillies put up four in the 4th inning - Nickau Pouaka-Grego walked, went to second on a single by Adony Mejia and scored on a single by Lou Helmig. Albert Rodriquez singled to score Mejia and Jehisbert Sevilla singled to score both Helmig and Rodriquez.

The Yankees scored twice in the fifth inning on two walks, a fielder’s choice and a single. They added two more in the seventh on two walks and three singles.

The Phillies came back for the walk off win by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Jehisbert Sevilla doubled and scored on a single by Diego Gonzalez. Oscar Gonzalez & Yemal Flores walked to load the bases. Nickau Pouaka-Gregodelivered the clutch hit - a two run single to score two runs !

On The Hill :

RH Starlyn Castillo - 3 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 3 K’s - first rehab appearance - fastball sat 93-95 mph, a couple breaking pitches up in the zone got hit but otherwise a very productive outing for the 20 yrs coming back from TJ surgery

RH Daniel Mejia - 2 IP, 2 R - 1 earned, 1 H, 3 BB, 1 K - max effort delivery - falls to the side - certainly has some pop but will have to refine the mechanics to reach peak effectiveness

LH Sergio Sanchez - 1 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s - first time I’ve seen him pitch was today - predominantly big breaking curve balls - like 90 % 😳. It was a swing and miss pitch today early but the hangers got hit - flashed FB

LH Tristan Garnett - 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s - one inherited runner scored - uses tall frame to extend release point - ball appears to get on hitters quickly

RH Alex McKenny - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s - big arm with mid to upper nineties heater

At Bat :

2B Diego Gonzalez ( 19 yrs old ) had three hits from the leadoff spot. Nickau Pouaka-Grego ( 17 yrs old ) had three hits and a walk, two RBIs and scored a run. SS Jehisbert Sevilla ( 19 yrs old ) had three hits including a double, two RBIs and scored a run. CF Albert Rodriquez ( 19 yrs old ) had two hits

Notes :

Jehisbert Sevilla has impressed with his strong arm at short stop - the 19 year old from Venezuela puts a lot of giddy up when he sends the ball across the diamond.

LH Ryan Sheriff & LH Kent Emmanuel will begin their rehab appearances tonight pitching for the Clearwater Threshers.
