ABS Umpiring Notes :

New strike zone went into effect for ABS ump games in the Low-A Southeast today. After much research and feedback, MLB decided to widen the zone by 4 full inches (2 on each side of plate), while shaving roughly 3.5 inches off the top. The depth of where the pitches are being registered has also been pushed back to the middle of the plate, rather than the front. The hope is that it will take away the strike calls on breaking balls in the dirt. Players were allowed to "flag" pitches on an iPad that they disagreed with. The majority on those were on strike calls up in the zone, and ball calls on the corners. - notes from John Vittas - radio announcer for Fort Myers ( Twins ).
