According to Wikipedia the definition of scrapple - “also known by the Pennsylvania Dutch Pannhaas ("pan hare” in English) is traditionally a mush of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal and wheat flour, often buckwheat flour, and spices. The mush is formed into a semi-solid congealed loaf, and slices of the scrapple are then pan-fried before serving. Scraps of meat left over from butchering, not used or sold elsewhere, were made into scrapple to avoid waste. Scrapple is best known as an American food of the southern Mid-Atlantic states ( Delaware, Maryland, South Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia )”
My wife is a big fan of this Philadelphia area breakfast delicacy … me not so much. It’s actually available here in the Clearwater, Florida area at a few select restaurants. On Friday of this week the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs will have a scrapple night promotion - specially made hats and uniforms will be worn by the team. Just for fun I polled a bunch of current and former Phillies minor league players and staff as to whether they know what scrapple is and if they’ve ever tried it. 🤓.
Survey results : 82 responses
Never heard of it : 70 %
Tried it and it’s ok : 12 %
Have heard of it but haven’t tried it : 9 %
Tried it but didn’t like it : 5 %
Really like it, even love it : 4 %
Those that “love it” prefer that’s it’s done crispy - most were from the northeast area although a few were from the Caribbean to my surprise. Some of the more adventurous eaters who hadn’t heard of it before said they would now order it if it’s available on the menu to give it a try. Others weren’t so willing.
Some of the comments I got back 🥸:
“Doesn’t look like something that would be too good”
“I saw Lehigh Valley has a new scrapple jersey so decided to look it up, doesn’t seem too appetizing😂”
“Had to google what that was”
“I tried it once on a bagel, kind of tasted like a hot dog to me”
“I wish they would have told me what it was before I ate it and not after 🤓”
“Never knew about it till talking to the Philly area guys”
“Not my go to the way pork-roll is but it’s an option”
“Love it - well done though”
Just an FYI the knowledge of Cheesesteaks and willingness to try those was far more positive 😎.
Just sayin
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
