1/28/25 : Today at the Complex - Winter HP Camp - Day Twelve

Writer: Steve PotterSteve Potter

Twenty two High Performance Camp pitchers were on the seven mounds this morning throwing side bullpens - participants included Enrique Segura, Griff McGarry, Danyony Pulido, Ethan Chenault, Eli Trop, Titan Hayes, Zack Tukis, Camron Hill, Marcus Morgan, Kyler Carmack, Luis Avila, Erik Ritchie, Ryan Dromboski, Ryan Degges, AJ Wilson, Erubiel Armenta, Kevin Warunek, Angel Liranzo, Marty Gair, Jaydenn Estanista, Kevin Warunek and Cody Stashak.

Batting Practice :

First outdoor BP of the Camp - held on Schmidt Field - good to hear the crack of the bat once again. I continue to be very impressed by the approach, mechanics and solid contact that Griffin Burkholder makes in his BP sessions - consistently seems to square it up and hit it hard with a smooth, quick and straight thru the baseball swing. Others who stood out to me today were catchers Alirio Ferrebus (he’s well built and consistently drove the ball) and Eduardo Tait (kid can rake - lefty hitter with solid mechanics who hits it hard) as well as Keaton Anthony (HP camp has seemingly added more body strength and tone - he’s got really strong bat to ball skills, hit multiple line drives but also popped a couple), outfielder Joel Dragoo (strong approach, quick swing, strong legs - drove three out in his last round) and infielder Aroon Escobar (patient hitter, even in BP, won’t chase - gets the bat head out thru the baseball - hard contact - powerful build). It’s only January and it was the first outdoor session but I’ve always believed ya play how ya practice and these fella did well this morning from my uneducated perspective.

Fielding Drills :

Infield/outfield work continued on Carlton field and pitchers did “run and gun” pull-down velocity drills on the side mounds. New outfielder Dylan Campbell (acquired from the Dodgers) participated in fielding and hitting as well as having a session on base running.

Big League Early Work :

Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm, Seth Johnson and Mick Abel threw side bullpens. Kerkering impressed with velocity (for January) and command - standing close by watching and hearing the pitches is enlightening as to how hard it must be to try to hit against him. I also thought that Mick threw well, ended his session on a crisp heater. Angel Mata and Caleb Ricketts were the catchers for the sessions. Jordan Romano and Aaron Nola were both in today continuing strength and conditioning work as was catcher Rafael Marchan.  JT Realmuto was in yesterday.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
