Notes on Phillies and former Phillies participating in winter leagues.
Dominican Winter League :
1/27/25 action : the Leones del Escogido defeated the Tigres del Licey 6-5 in the decisive seventh game of the championship series to claim their 17th league title in the team’s history (the last time they won was nine years ago). The current version of the league has been in operation since 1951. Former Phillies infielder Jean Segura was 4 for 4 in the game for the Leones with a walk and two RBIs. He posted a .414/.485/.517 slash line in the series in 29 AB’s. Johan Rojas went 0 for 4 in the game for the Tigres but hit .300 (9 for 30) in the series with 5 stolen bases - he stole 34 bases in 48 games played over the entirety of the season (23 in regular season, 6 in the round robin semi-finals and 5 in the championship series).
Mexican Pacific League :
1/27/25 action : travel date - no game scheduled. The Championship series resumes today with the Charros de Jalisco leading the Tomateros de Culiacán 3-2 in the best of seven series.
Australian Baseball League :
The Perth Heat will host the Canberra Calvery in the best of three league championship series beginning on 1/31/25.
Serie de las Americas :
Organized and formed in September of 2024 by the concurrently formed Baseball Association of the Americas this is the initial tournament for countries not in the renowned Caribbean Series. It’s being held in Nicaragua and began on 1/24 - runs thru 1/30. The six team tournament is a round-robin format where each team faces each other once. The four teams with the best records then advance to the semifinals (1st vs. 4th and 2nd vs. 3rd). The two semifinal winners meet in the final to decide the tournament champion.
Participating are Argentina (Club DAOM), Colombia (Caimanes de Barranquilla), Cuba (Lenadores de Las Tunas), Curacao (Curacao Goats), Nicaragua (Leones de Leon) and Panama (Águilas Metropolitanas).
Former Phillies playing in the tournament include Jhiandido Tromp (Curacao), Harold Arauz and Severino Gonzalez (Panama).
So far Curacao is leading the standings with a 4-0 record.
Caribbean Series :
The 2025 Caribbean Series begins on January 31st. Participating teams will be from the Dominican Republic (Leones del Escogido), Mexico (TBD), Puerto Rico (Indios de Mayaguez), Venezuela (Cardenales de Lara) and for the first time Japan. The tournament this year is being held in Mexico. The Championship game of the tournament is scheduled for February 7th.
Venezuela Winter League :
The season is complete - the Cardenales de Lara were crowned champions.
Puerto Rico Winter League :
The season is complete - the Indios de Mayaguez were crowned champions.
Colombia Winter League :
The season is complete - the Caimanes de Barranquilla were crowned champions.
Nicaragua Winter League :
The season is complete - the Leones de Leon were crowned champions.
Panama Winter League :
The season is complete - the Águilas Metropolitanas were crowned champions.
This will be my last separate article on the Winter Leagues for the 2024/2025 season - I will fold the Mexican League and Australian League championship results into the ongoing “Today at the Complex” articles as a sub-topic. Hope ya all enjoyed the coverage.
