Australian Baseball League :
Semifinal playoff round ( best of three ) this week with Perth playing Brisbane and Adelaide playing Auckland.
January 27th :
Adelaide 5 Auckland 3 : Anthony Quirion hit a three run double in the 8th inning to provide Adelaide a come from behind victory. Jared Carr doubled and scored a run earlier in the game. Nick Ward singled and walked in four plate appearances out of the lead off spot and scored twice. Jordan Fowler started on the mound and pitched 3 2/3 innings ( 3 R - 2 earned, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K’s - 61 pitches - 36 strikes ) - former Phillie Austin Ross pitched two scoreless frames ( 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K’s - 32 pitches - 22 strikes ).
January 28th :
Adelaide/Auckland - rained out - rescheduled for 1/29
January 29th :
Auckland 2 Adelaide 0 : Nick Ward was 2 for 4 however Auckland hurlers led by Nippon League veteran Toru Murata ( 5 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 1 K ) limited the Giants to 5 hits total. Starlyn Castillo pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief ( 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s - 30 pitches - 20 strikes ) and former Phillie Josh Tols ( 2/3 IP - retired both batters faced - stranded two inherited runners ) held the game close.
Adelaide 4 Auckland 2 : Jared Carr singled and was hit by a pitch and scored two runs in three plate appearances - the Giants were held to four hits total ( all by the 6 thru 9 hitters in the order ). Austin Ross pitched a scoreless inning in relief ( 2 BB, 3 K’s ) as the Giants held on to advance to the League Championship Series.
Perth defeated Brisbane 2 games to 1 in the other semi final series to advance to the championship round. Perth is seeking it’s sixth league crown ( Claxton Shield ) while Adelaide will attempt to win their first ABL championship.
Puerto Rico Winter League :
Mayaguez defeated Carolina 4 games to 3 to win the league championship. RHP Carlos Francisco pitched 1 1/3 innings on 1/22 ( 1 unearned R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K ) for Mayaguez. He retired both batters he faced on 1/23 in the 7th inning and earned a hold in a 2-1 Mayaguez win. In the final game of the series Francisco struck out the only batter he faced in the 8th inning to help Mayaguez win another 2-1 game. Former Phillies outfielder Jan Hernandez had three hits in that game for Carolina. Congrats to Carlos Francisco on a strong winter league performance - the 23 year old made the league all-star team and is now on the Puerto Rico roster for the upcoming Caribbean Series.
Venezuela Winter League :
Ali Castillo went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 walks for the Leones against the Tiburones on 1/23 in an 8-6 win giving them a one game lead in the championship series. Rafael Marchan went 1 for 4 on 1/24 for Tiburones.
Jonathan Petit pitched two scoreless innings for Tiburones on 1/28 ( 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K’s - 35 pitches - 22 strikes ) - Ali Castillo had two hits for the Leones in the game. The Leones won 7-2 to take a 3-2 series lead. Series play resumes on 1/30
Mexican Winter League :
Former Phillies RHP Manuel Urias pitched 3 innings in relief ( 3 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 K ) for Los Mochis on 1/24 against Guasave in the championship series. Los Mochis won the league championship series on 1/28 four games to two with a 5-0 victory.
