1/3/2021 : Winter League Update


Australian League :


The Adelaide Giants will open their season tomorrow ( 1/4/21 ) in Brisbane as they will play in a hub location with Perth and Brisbane to start the year ... nine Phillies players ( Pitchers Taylor Lehman, Jonathan Hennigan and Austin Ross, Infielders Rixon Wingrove, Kendall Simmons and Luke Williams, Catchers Mitchell Edwards and Colby Fitch and Outfielder Corneluis Randolph ) are on the initial active roster. RHP Tyler Burch will make the trip to Brisbane but was just recently released from quarantine so won’t begin on the active roster. Infielder Jamari Baylor was unable to get to Australia in time for the season and RHP Kyle Glogoski decided to remain in New Zealand rather than join the Giants this year.


The Melbourne Aces will play Canberra for the next week or so ... the Sydney team is quarantined for now it seems. Melbourne has played eight games thus far ... LHP Josh Tols has appeared in three, RHP Luke Leftwich has pitched twice. Chris Burke has accumulated 13 AB’s and has two hits and two walks.


Domincan League :


The playoffs have started with four teams : Gigantes, Estrellas, Aguilas and the Toros in action.


RHP Neftali Feliz finished the regular season for Aguilas with a 3.07 ERA in 15 games ( 14.2 IP ) with 22 K’s and 6 walks ... he finished 12 games and recorded 8 saves.


Also pitching for Aguilas RHP Michael Ynoa posted a 2.13 ERA in 13 games ( 12.2 IP ) with 18 K’s and 4 BB. He had 4 holds and 1 save.


Both recently signed minor league free agent contracts with the Phillies.


Venezuelan League :


The regular season continues and Daniel Brito is playing very well for Aguilas del Zulia ... he’s slashing .290/.342/.430 thru 100 AB’s with 5 doubles, 3 home runs and 16 RBIs.


Puerto Rico :


The league has also entered into it’s playoff tournament however Covid issues shut down the Mayaguez/Manati game today.


Outfielder Jadiel Sanchez had two hits for Team RA12 in today’s playoff game against Caguas including a double. The nineteen year old had a very good regular season showing against older competitors ... hitting .250 in 44 AB’s with 2 doubles and a triple while playing very good defensively in right field.


LHP Gabriel Cotto threw 2 1/3 perfect innings in game one of the playoffs for RA12 on Saturday with two strikeouts. The 20 year old Cotto pitched in seven games during the regular season posting a 1.00 ERA in 9 IP ... he struggled early with command bunching nine walks but pitched very well as the season went on.


Mexico :


The league began it’s playoff rounds on Saturday with 8 teams in the tournament. Victor Arano is on the Yaquis de Obregon roster.

Maybe ... just maybe ... big league Spring Training Camp isn’t far away 🤷‍♂️
