The Phillies have signed RHP Jake Jewell to a minor league contract as he’s now listed on the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs roster. Jake pitched in the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins organizations last season. He’s 29 years old and was the Angels 5th round draft selection in the 2014 draft from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
Last season he pitched in 45 minor league games at the AAA level ( all in relief ) and totaled 56 IP, he posted a combined 3.21 ERA with 65 K’s and 21 walks - a 1.11 WHIP - 36 of those games were with the Guardians AAA affiliate in Columbus where he posted a 2.49 ERA in 43 1/3 IP. The other 9 appearances were with St Paul in the Twins organization.
Jewell was on Cleveland’s 40 man roster and was designated for assignment in August - was claimed by Minnesota but then designated by them in September - he declared free agency in October. He’s pitched in 31 major league games with the Angels and Cubs - 7.75 ERA in 38 1/3 IP - 34 K’s - 14 walks - last appeared in the big leagues in 2021. Jake has been in six organizations to date - Angels, Giants, Dodgers, Cubs, Guadians and Twins.
He features a 91-95 mph fastball, a splitter as his changeup, slider and curveball (with the slider being the more advanced pitch) and a cut-fastball.
