Couldn’t sleep for some reason so figured I’d post this in the early AM hours 🥴
Focused on current and former Phillies organization players.
Games played from 1/1 thru 1/7 ( 1/8 for Australia League )
Australian Baseball League :
January 6th Game Action :
Anthony Quirion doubled for Adelaide - he had one of their two hits in a 2-0 loss against Brisbane, Jared Carr had the other hit - a single. LHP Jordan Fowler pitched four innings ( 2 R - 1 earned, 7 H, 0 BB, 1 HB, 4 K’s - 70 pitches - 47 strikes ). RHP Austin Ross ( former Phillie ) pitched two scoreless frames ( 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K’s - 25 pitches - 18 strikes ).
January 7th Game Action :
Rixon Wingrove tripled and homered for Adelaide and scored both runs in a 2-1 victory in game one of a double header vs Brisbane. The game ended on a play at the plate when Brisbane’s Daniel Nilsson doubled to center field - T.J. Bennett scored but Logan Trowbridge was thrown out at home - center fielder Jared Carr to second baseman Nick Ward to catcher Ryan January on a bang bang play - both Carr and Ward have shown great ability to deliver strong relay throws over the course of the season. Former Phillie Josh Tols threw a scoreless frame in relief.
In game two former Phillie Michael Martinez played shortstop for Adelaide and went 1 for 4 with a double. Anthony Quirion drove in his 23rd run of the season. Rough outing for Starlyn Castillo ( 4 1/3 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 1 BB, 3 Al’s - 70 pitches - 48 strikes ) - Brisbane won 8-1.
Chris Burke homered for Melbourne in game one of their double header - a 3-2 win against Syndney.
January 8th Game Action :
Nick Ward went 3 for 5, scored twice and drove in two runs for Adelaide in a 9-7 loss to Brisbane. Adelaide trailed 9-2 going into the bottom of the ninth inning and scored five runs but fell short - Brisbane won the series 3 games to 1.
Chris Burke was 2 for 2 with a triple for Melbourne in game one of their doubleheader against Sydney. It was his first full week back after missing a few weeks.
Dominican Winter League :
Newly acquired LHP Gregory Soto pitched a perfect inning for Aguilas Cibaenas in a playoff game on 1/6 needing just 8 pitches ( 5 strikes ) to complete the inning. He also pitched an inning on 1/2 ( 1 H, 1 unearned R, 1 BB, 2 K’s - 24 pitches - 14 strikes ). He joined the team for the playoffs.
Former Phillies catcher Jorge Alfaro went 3 for 3 with a walk and scored three runs for the Tigres vs Estrellas on 1/3, he went 2 for 5 on 1/4.
Venezuelan Winter League :
Former Phillies minor league RHP Mario Sanchez pitched 6 scoreless innings ( 6 H, 0 BB, 4 K’s - 87 pitches - 59 strikes ) for Cardenales on 1/3 vs Navegantes. I remember giving Mario a car ride back to his residence a few years back on a rainy day from the complex in Clearwater - he was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery that summer. Nice young man - he’s now 28 years old, pitched in the Twins organization last year and is now a free agent.
Former Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs ( also walked once ) for the Cardenales on 1/5 in a lopsided 19-6 win against the Leones. He went 2 for 5 with a double on 1/5 against the Tigres. Former Phillie Cesar Hernandez is now playing for the Cardenales as well.
Puerto Rico Winter League :
Carlos Francisco earned his 5th hold on 1/3 by pitching a scoreless inning ( 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K - 9 pitches - 5 strikes ) for Mayaguez against RA12. He pitched a scoreless inning on 1/7 in the first semifinal playoff game against Caguas allowing just one batter to reach base ( HBP ). Former Phillies minor leaguer Danny Ortiz homered in that game helping Mayaguez to a 2-1 victory.
Former Phillies RHP Yacksel Rios picked up his 7th win ( 7-0 ) of the regular season on 1/2 by pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts vs Santurce lowering his regular season ERA to 0.65. He recently signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves with an invitation to big league spring training.
Mexican Winter League :
Former Phillies RHP Manuel Urias pitched a scoreless inning ( 1 H, 2 K’s ) for Los Mochis on 1/2 vs Navajoa.
Winter League Regular Season Stats :
It used to be relatively easy to find stats on Phillies Minor Leaguers playing winter ball - not so much the past couple years. Here’s a listing of the regular season ( playoff rounds are now in play in the Caribbean Leagues ) stats I’ve accumulated from both league sites and baseball reference. The leagues are in their last few weeks of play - soon we will be welcoming players back to the complexes for 2023 pre-season training - in fact some of the Phillies minor leaguers will be in High Performance camp beginning on Monday ( January 9th ).
