This Phillies off-season I will continue the series “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” with profiles presented in groupings by defensive positions for the players who were still part of the minor league player development program at season’s end. The notes will reflect statistics, my thoughts and each player and input from them and others as I have it. They are presented in order by position and then alphabet in groupings of players per article. Here’s Part Four of the pitchers highlighting the following :
Tegan Cain
Kyler Carmack
Eiberson Castellano
Moises Chase
Ethan Chenault
RH Tegan Cain - 22 years old (23 on 12/2/25) - drafted in 13th round of the 2024 draft from the University of Kansas
2025 Stats : did not pitch during the season - worked with the rehab team at the complex returning from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in the fall of 2024. Has pitched in just two professional games - August of 2024 with the Threshers - two perfect innings - two strikeouts. He began throwing side bullpens this past August (8) and September (4) - progressed to throwing live BP’s on 9/19 and 9/26 before breaking camp.
2025 Notes : is a side winder (delivers from low slot) who features a sinker (94-96 mph, has reached 99), change-up, slider, and curve. Graduated from Ellis HS in Ellis, Kansas. Spent two years playing for Barton Community College before transferring to the University of Kansas for his junior year after which the Phillies drafted him. I saw him throw in person for the first time this past August in a side bullpen at the complex - I was impressed with the release point (very unique) and ball movement (I watched from behind the plate) - talked to him afterwards and told him so. Hopefully he’s cleared for full participation in Spring Training and can return to game action next season.
RH Kyler Carmack - 22 years old (23 on 1/6/26) - drafted in 20th round of 2024 draft from the University of Mississippi
2025 Stats : did not pitch during the season - worked with the rehab team at the complex returning from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in the spring of 2025. He appeared in three games in August of 2024 with the Clearwater Threshers.
2025 Notes : when healthy features a 93-94 mph fastball that can touch 95/96 as well as three breaking ball deliveries (change-up, cutter and slurve). He began his collegiate career at Arkansas State and had a strong 2023 season (after red-shirting his freshman year) there making sixteen mound appearances, twelve of which were starts. He also played the outfield at Arkansas State. Kyler then transferred to Ole Miss for the 2024 season and had decided to transfer back to Arkansas State for 2025 but instead signed with the Phillies after being drafted. Previous to college he starred in two sports at Cabot High School in his hometown of Cabot, Arkansas. Kyler was a prep standout both on the diamond (pitcher/outfield) and as a wide receiver/safety in football earning all-state and all-conference recognition in both sports. He’s early on in his throwing program at the complex.
RH Eiberson Castellano - 24 years old (25 on 5/9/26) - signed as international free agent 7/2/18 from Maracaibo, VZ
2025 Stats : appeared in 20 games (one start) with Reading totaling 35 IP with a 5.14 ERA, 39 K’s and 14 walks. He was on the IL from May 4th to July 26th. Is now pitching in the Arizona Fall League as part of the Phillies contingent on the Surprise Saguaros.
2025 Notes : was selected in the 2024 Major League Rule 5 Draft by the Twins and spent most of 2025 Spring Training with them. He struggled after the Twins returned him to the Phillies, velocity was down and he was placed on the IL. When right he uses a combination of a power slurve and mid to high nineties four seamer and sinker as his primary pitches. Eiberson has the stuff to pitch in the major leagues - a scout with the Twins reiterated that to me in a conversation this summer, they debated on keeping him on their roster but he had trouble in the spring throwing strikes.
RH Moises Chase - 22 years old (23 on 6/9/26) - acquired in trade with Orioles 7/30/24
2025 Stats : appeared in six games (16.2 IP) posting a 3.24 ERA with 19 K’s and 12 walks for Reading before undergoing Tommy John surgery near the end of May. He spent the balance of the season working with the rehab team at the complex.
2025 Notes : was placed on the 40 man roster on 11/19/24 to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. When he’s healthy has dynamic stuff. He was originally signed as an international free agent on 7/2/19 by the Orioles from La Guaira, Venezuela - was acquired by the Phillies along with Seth Johnson in the Gregory Soto trade. Baseball America described him this way “Chace’s fastball is one of the signatures of the righthander’s mix. The pitch averages 95 mph and peaks at 98, but under the hood is where it really stands out. Chace’s lower slot, unusual carry and an average of roughly 18.5 inches of induced vertical break combine to produce a fastball that reminds some of the offering that has made Astros righthander Cristian Javier famous. The pitch garnered a miss rate north of 40%, and Chace backs it with a deep and varied pitch mix that has been tweaked as he’s matured. His current repertoire includes a short, hard slider, a sweeper and a changeup. The slider—which has the look of a cutter at times—is an effective offering against both righties and lefties and helps set up his sweeper for swings and misses. His changeup needs further development but has a chance to be average. Chace’s next step will be to turn his control into command, especially when it comes to pounding the zone early in counts.” The game he pitched for Reading on 8/31/24 against Somerset was epic - he dominated a lineup that included rehabbing major leaguer Jon Berti - in that game Chace retired 18 of the 19 hitters he faced and the last 16 hitters he faced in a row (11 by strikeout) and struck out the side in both the second and fourth innings - the only hit he allowed was a first inning single (he struck out the side that inning also) - in total he pitched six innings in the contest allowing no runs on one hit, walked none and struck out 13 batters! He threw 81 pitches - 57 of which were strikes (71 %). It was one of the most dominant minor league performances you will ever witness. Players I talked to that were at the game were in awe of how good he was in the contest. He’s currently continuing to work with rehab team at the complex - is still in the non-throwing stage of recovery - may be ready to return to game action in the later months of the 2026 season.
RH Ethan Chenault - 24 years old (25 on 3/28/26) - drafted in 18th round of the 2024 draft from UNC Wilmington
2025 Stats : appeared in 19 games with Jersey Shore (19.2 IP) posting a 5.95 ERA with 19 K’s and 9 walks. After a slow start in April he posted a 0.00 ERA in seven May appearances (8 IP) - was placed on the IL on 5/27, returned on 6/14 and pitched in five more games (5 IP) before being placed on the IL again on 7/8. Ethan underwent elbow (TJ) surgery on 8/29 and missed the balance of the year.
2025 Notes : is at home in the first stage of rehab/recovery and will eventually return to the complex to continue work with the Phillies rehab team. Will very likely miss the entire 2026 season. When he’s healthy features a fastball (93 to 96 mph), curve, cutter and change-up. His curve ball is an out maker and go-to pitch. Big and athletic frame at 6’5”.
Ethan’s 2025 season reflections : “I learned alot this season about preparation and being consistent everyday, about taking care of my body from every aspect of the game. I was hurt most of the year when I was playing and ended up getting season ending surgery so didn’t have much chance of progression but happy with the way I pitched this year other than the first month. Just going into next year trying to take advantage of everything rehab has to offer and become a better version of myself when it’s all said and done.”
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
