10/18/22 :   Minor League Updates

At the Complex

Strength and conditioning workouts continue for players participating in “High Performance Camp”.  The camp is scheduled to run thru October 28th.  In addition rehab players continue their work and the “stay ready” players from the Lehigh Valley roster continue to grind out practices.

When the foursome of Donny Sands, Rafael Marchan, Yairo Munoz & Scott Kingery take batting practice on Roberts Field each day it’s become common practice for the Clubhouse Services group to take the outfield and get after the batted baseballs.  They go about their efforts in the same enthusiastic manner as the players - the other day Vinny Pezzino ( Coordinator - Clubhouse Services ) made a great diving catch of a quickly sinking low line drive in left center field - the catch was so good that Scott Kingery gave Vinny an ovation!  👏.

Today we watched BP again and the clubhouse service team continued to play all out in their fielding efforts during BP with both dives and leaps incorporated, ( Vinny in particular has the climb of the outfield wall and leap down pat - even as balls sail over the fence 🤓 ), as the players sent baseballs flying into the outfield - the “clubbies” are certainly doing their part to “Protect the Standard” - makes what might be ordinary BP sessions into extraordinarily entertaining ones - this old fan appreciates the efforts as I’m sure the players hitting and development staff also do 👍👏⚾️.

Live BP

Tyler Phillips, Spencer Van Scoyoc, Eduar Segovia & Vinny Nittoli each threw sessions today.  It was the second such outing for Phillips and Van Scoyoc - they continue to progress in finding their feel for pitching again - mechanically looked on point to me - just a matter of pitch repetition for each.  Segovia is a little further along - we were again impressed with how the baseball is coming out of his hand - really good movement on his pitches and velo continues to build.

It’s the first time I’ve seen Nittoli pitch in person, has a funky delivery ( a bit of Gene Garber in it ) where he turns his back to the hitter and then cross fires - really seems deceptive, ball remains hidden till last minute of release.  We saw quite a few sliders with good side action movement which set up his fastball as a pitch that jumped out on hitters, especially if they anticipate the breaking ball.  He actually got stung by a bee on his opposite shoulder while delivering one pitch - the ball hit batter Cade Fergus - just another thing I can chalk up as “weird stuff ya see in baseball” 🤓.  Both Vinny and Cade seemed all right after the “bee sting HBP” - no worries all around 😎.
