This Phillies off-season I will continue the series  “Annual Phillies Minor League Player Notes” with profiles presented in groupings by defensive positions for the players who were still part of the minor league player development program at season’s end. The notes will reflect statistics, my thoughts on each player and input from them and others as I have it. They are presented in order by position and then alphabet in groupings of players per article. Here’s Part Eight of the pitchers highlighting the following :

Tristan Garnett

Cole Gilley

Jonathan Gonzalez

Orlando Gonzalez

Mavis Graves

LH Tristan Garnett - 27 years old (28 on 3/29/26) - signed as a free agent 7/20/21 - Cal State Dominguez Hills, CA

2025 Stats :  began the year on the IL with an oblique strain and worked at the complex on rehab recovery - sent to Clearwater on 6/24 - made four rehab appearances with the Threshers (5 IP, 0 runs, 6 K’s, 1 BB). Was activated with Reading on 7/8 - 20 appearances (25 IP) - 2.16 ERA, 37 K’s, 12 walks. Promoted to Lehigh Valley on 9/19 - pitched in one game (1 IP) with the IronPigs.

2025 Notes :  straight over the top unique delivery from a 6’6” frame presents the baseball to the hitter as if it’s right on top of them with his extended release point. Has an outstanding change-up which is his predominant pitch - fastball sits in the 91 to 93 mph range - change up has a 10 to 13 mph differential from same arm slot and arm speed - very effective pitch (swing and miss delivery). Also throws a slider and cutter. One of the nicest young men we’ve met and is highly respected by teammates and coaches/staff in the organization. The changeup is big league caliber. He’s Rule 5 eligible - is playing winter ball in Puerto Rico. Parents are great folks as well.

RH Cole Gilley  - 24 years old (25 on 7/22/26)  - drafted in 10th round of the 2025 draft - University of Indiana, IN

2025 Stats :  spent the majority of his time after signing working at the complex in draftee mini camp - threw five side bullpens and two live BP’s before being activated with Clearwater on 9/3 - pitched in one game with the Threshers (two innings, no hits, one walk and three strikeouts).  Posted a 3.54 ERA in his only season at Indiana appearing in 18 games (12 starts) totaling 68.2 IP with 75 K’s and 20 walks.

2025 Notes :  features a four seam fastball (91-94 mph), slider(sweeper), cutter and change up. The sweeper has big break and reportedly is his best pitch. He was a consistent strike thrower throughout his collegiate career which began with three years at Indiana State before transferring to Indiana. He attended Columbus East HS in Indiana - had Tommy John surgery in 2021 and missed his 2022 collegiate season. He was a fifth year senior at Indiana. I have yet to see him pitch in person - he is participating in Fall High Performance Camp - this spring likely begins the 2026 season with Clearwater.

LH Jonathan Gonzalez  - 23 years old (24 on 8/9/26) - drafted in 14th round of the 2025 draft - Stetson University, FL

2025 Stats :  did not pitch in a game after signing - instead worked at the complex in draftee mini camp - threw a couple side bullpens at the end of August before breaking camp.  At Stetson during his senior season made 15 starts (93.2 IP) recording a 2.21 ERA with 105 K’s and 21 walks - posted a 0.972 WHIP. Was a workhorse in his four collegiate seasons - 59 appearances (32 starts) totaling 247.2 IP recording a 3.74 ERA with 263 K’s and 61 walks.

2025 Notes :  he’s from Miami, Florida and attended Columbus HS - his brother Anthony was also on the Stetson roster as a catcher. His older brother Chris was a previous captain at Stetson - Jonathan chose to go to Stetson over Rice and Miami. I have yet to see him pitch - Baseball America said this about him “An undersized lefthander, Gonzalez has above-average command and relies heavily on his fastball-changeup combination. He has an advanced feel for his changeup that generates a 48% whiff rate and routinely flashes plus. It’s an effective offering against both left and righthanded hitters and is his bread-and-butter pitch.”

Jonathan’s 2025 season reflections :   “I didn’t pitch for an affiliate this year due to workload in my college season. I just learned the ins and outs of being a pro and how to treat each day the same. Routines are very important as well as maintaining my body as well as I can. I feel like I progressed substantially and now i’m ready to show what I’ve got in 2026. I’m on a lifting schedule and am back in Clearwater for High Performance Camp. After the holidays I believe I will be back in Clearwater ramping up for Spring Training!  I’m hoping to be sent out to an affiliate once spring training breaks. I believe they have a good plan for me so wherever I end up and I’ll be happy and put my best foot forward.”

RH Orlando Gonzalez  - 22 years old (23 on 11/22/25) - signed as international free agent - 7/29/23 -  Tepatiltan, Mexico

2025 Stats :  began the season on the IL - went on rehab assignment with the FCL Phillies on 5/3 - made five appearances (7 IP) recording a 3.86 ERA with 7 K’s and 2 walks. Was promoted to Clearwater on 5/24 - made 23 appearances (two as opener) - 4.29 ERA in 42 IP with 40 K’s and 17 walks. Had a strong month of July - six appearances (13.1 IP) posting a 2.70 ERA with 10 K’s. In two seasons ranging from DSL to Clearwater he’s appeared in 41 games (nine starts) totaling 92 IP with a 3.03 ERA with 82 K’s and 46 walks.

2025 Notes :  features a four seam and sinking fastball in the 91-94 mph range - touches 96, slider and changeup. Velocity ticked up a notch as the season went on. Has had struggles with throwing strikes consistently. Has a good plan on the mound that when he executes produces outs. He’s now pitching for Hermosillo in the Mexican Winter League which he has done each of the last two off-seasons.

LH Mavis Graves - 21 years old (22 on 11/20/25) - drafted in 6th round of the 2022 draft from Eastside HS, Taylors, SC

2025 Stats :  made 21 starts (81.2 IP) for Jersey Shore posting a 4.41 ERA with 103 K’s and 51 walks - in the first half had a 6.18 ERA in 11 games (39.1 IP), BAA .280 - much better second half - 10 games (42.1 IP) with a 2.76 ERA, BAA .192. An outstanding two months to finish the year - in July/August - 9 starts (37.1 IP) with a 1.93 ERA - 45 K’s and 20 BB. Posted a 0.89 WHIP in 15.2 July innings.

2025 Notes :  at the mid season break Mavis told me “ This year so far has been a big year for development for me, I’ve had ups and downs and one of my main goals in the first half was to get my routines down and I feel like I’ve come a long way with them. For the rest of the year I want to build consistent starts and start dominating hitters.” He certainly accomplished that as evidenced by the numbers he put up in the second half. Mavis features a four seam fastball in the 91 to 94 mph range, slider (cutter), sinker, sweeping curve and a very good change-up. He’s a big fella at 6’6” with a good competitive approach and has a great amount of upside. Has a good feel for the changeup which has a decent ten mph differential from his four seamer. He’s made steady progress during his three full seasons in the program with a projectable path to the show - should be in line for a bump to AA level Reading’s rotation next spring.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
