There were 85 position players this season in MLB between the ages of 20 and 23 (age as of 6/30 in the season) - 3 twenty year olds, 12 twenty-one year olds, 21 twenty-two year olds and 49 twenty three year olds.


Twenty year olds : Catcher Ethan Salas was a late season call up for the Padres - he played in 16 games - 40 PA’s - .256/.275/.462. Colt Emerson played in 69 games for the Mariners - 241 PA’s - .190/.246/.335 with 8 HR’s and 23 RBIs. Konnor Griffin played in 80 games for the Pirates - 339 PA’s - .272/.324/.404 - 15 doubles, 6 HR’s, 33 RBIs.


Twenty-one year olds :Ā  four of the twelve played in more than 100 games (Sam Basallo - Orioles, Bryce Eldridge - Giants, AJ Ewing - Mets & Kevin McGonigle - Tigers). McGonigle was an AL All-Star - 707 PA’s - .278/.376/.430 with 28 doubles, 18 HR’s and 72 RBIs.


Twenty-two year olds : eight of the twenty-one played in more than 100 games including Justin Crawford of the Phillies - two (Sal Stewart - Reds & Junior Caminero - Rays) played in all 162 games. Cole Young of the Mariners played in 160 games. Stewart (32 HR’s, 111 RBIs), Caminero (42 HR’s, 101 RBIs), Jackson Chourio - Brewers (25 HR’s, 75 RBIs, .291 BA - 573 PA’s) and Carter Jensen - Royals (27 HR’s, 81 RBIs) had standout years.


Twenty-three year olds :Ā  sixteen of the forty-nine played in more than 100 games. Nine of the forty-nine hit below the Mendoza line (.200) while appearing in 40 games or less. James Wood of the Nationals hit 30 HR’s with 77 RBIs while posting a .388 OBP in 623 PA’s. Five others (Nick Kurtz - A’s, Jac Caglianone - Royals, Carson Benge - Mets, Daylen Lile - Nationals & Jackson Merrill - Padres) hit 20 or more home runs with Merrill leading the group with 26. Only four of the sixteen who played in 100 games or more had a batting average above .280 (Javier Sanoja - Marlins - .295 in 461 ABs, Caglianone - Royals - .289 in 512 AB’s, Luke Keaschell - Twins - .282 in 528 AB’s & Benge - Mets - .282 in 595 AB’s).

2026 - 85 position players 20 to 23 yrs old - 3 20’s, 12 21’s, 21 22’s, 49 23’s

2025 - 84 position players 20 to 23 yrs old - 2 20’s, 9 21’s, 28 22’s, 45 23’s

2024 - 71 position players 20 to 23 yrs old - 3 20’s, 8 21’s, 28 22’s, 32 23’s

2023 - 81 position players 20 to 23 yrs old - 1 19 yr old, 3 20’s, 12 21’s, 23 22’s, 42 23’s

2022 - 85 position players 20 to 23 yrs old - 2 20’s, 10 21’s, 29 22’s, 44 23’s

2021 - 95 position players 20 to 23 yrs old - 1 20’s, 9 21’s, 21 22’s, 64 23’s


2026 - league average age - 27.8

2025 - league average age - 27.9

2024 - league average age - 27.9

2023 - league average age - 28.0

2022 - league average age - 28.2

2021 - league average age - 28.4



Pitchers :


There were 45 pitchers this season in MLB between the ages of 20 and 23 (age as of 6/30 in the season) - no twenty year olds, 2 twenty-one year olds, 13 twenty-two year olds and 30 twenty three year olds.


Twenty-one year olds :Ā  Kade Anderson made seven starts for the Mariners - 35.2 IP - 3.79 ERA while reliever Didier Fuentes appeared in 58 games for the Braves - he was outstanding with a 2.45 ERA in 73.1 IP.


Twenty-two year olds :Ā  the standouts amongst the 13 pitchers who made appearances were Trey Yesavage of Toronto - 20 starts - 3.69 ERA in 97.2 IP and Walbert Urena of the Angels - 29 appearances - 27 starts - 2.97 ERA in 148.1 IP.


Twenty-three year olds :Ā  Chase Burns of the Reds was outstanding - 15-3 record - 2.86 ERA in 29 starts - 154.1 IP. Payton Tolle of the Red Sox posted a 3.03 ERA in 26 starts (148.1 IP). Both Bubba Chandler of the Pirates & Eury Perez of the Marlins pitcher 150 innings plus. Andrew Painter of the Phillies made 25 appearances (23 starts) amassing 126.2 IP - he had a 3.65 ERA in 11 second half starts (61.2 IP) and finished his season with three stellar scoreless innings in the playoffs.

2026 - 45 pitchers 20 to 23 yrs old - 0 20’s, 2 21’s, 13 22’s, 30 23’s

2025 - 46 pitchers 20 to 23 yrs old - 1 20’s, 3 21’s, 15 22’s, 27 23’s

2024 - 46 pitchers 20 to 23 yrs old - 1 20’s, 4 21’s, 14 22’s, 27 23’s

2023 - 43 pitchers 20 to 23 yrs old - 2 20’s, 3 21’s, 8 22’s, 30 23’s

2022 - 34 pitchers 20 to 23 yrs old - 0 20’s, 1 21’s, 11 22’s, 22 23’s

2021 -Ā  50 pitchers 20 to 23 yrs old - 0 20’s, 6 21’s, 13 22’s, 31 23’s


2026 - league average age - 29.1

2025 - league average age - 29.2

2024 - league average age - 29.0

2023 - league average age - 28.9

2022 - league average age - 28.8

2021 - league average age - 28.7
