Damon Jones, Bryson Stott and Logan O’Hoppe all played in the Arizona Fall League All Star game on Saturday. Stott doubled and continues to impress, this is what Josh Norris of Baseball America wrote about Jones -
“ “Best Breaking Ball: Damon Jones, LHP, Phillies — Jones has shown one of the most impressive breaking balls all fall league in a slider with high spin and hard sweeping action. Beyond his appearance in the Fall Stars Game, Jones has shown the ability to lengthen and shorten the pitch’s break to get either called strikes or swings and misses. On Saturday, he faced two hitters and struck out one—Jose Tena (Guardians)—to wave meekly at the slider. The five sliders Jones threw in the Fall Stars Game averaged a spin rate of between 2,700 and 2,800 rpms. Jones certainly needs to tighten his command and control (nine walks in 37 batters faced) but he’s certainly got the stuff to dominate in short bursts. In a league that has been dominated by hitting all season long, Jones’ breaking ball has helped him whiff 12 in 9.1 innings.”
We’ve always felt Damon has big league stuff, nice to see the young man excelling in Arizona.
Two other Phillies had good weeks - OF Jadiel Sanchez hit a home run for the RA12 team in the Puerto Rican league on Friday and went 2 for 4 in his game on Sunday. The 20 year old outfielder is playing for the second winter in a row on his native island. He’s 5 for 17 in his first four games with a double and home run with four RBIs. He’s one of a collection of promising young outfielders in the system.
RHP Carlos Betancourt threw six scoreless innings over two outings this past week playing for Aguilas de Zulia in the Venezuelan Winter League. The 20 year old has pitched nine innings in total yielding just one run and five hits. He’s struck out eight batters and walked two. Carlos was limited to three innings this past season in the Florida Complex League but we saw him get regular work in Fall Instructs. After signing in 2017 as a seventeen year old he’s been slowed by injuries, initially a knee issue however when we’ve seen him throw he’s shown a mid nineties fast ball and an improving slider, both have swing and miss capabilities. Anxious to see him in action this coming spring as he’s seemingly healthy and ready to go. Has a chance to be a good one.
