11/19/21 : Phillies November Signings - Minor Leagues

The Phillies signed RHP Bubby Rossman to a minor league contract on 11/9/21. He’s 29 years old and was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 22nd round of the 2014 Draft out of California State University in Dominguez Hills. He played three years with the Dodgers until being released in 2016. Since there he’s played independent league baseball with stops in the Can-Am League, the American Association, City of Champions Cup and this past summer in the Atlantic League playing for the York Revolution.

Rossman Is 6’6”, 251 lbs and features a fastball that sits in the 93-97 mph range, a curve ( 77-80 ) and Splitter ( 80-83 ) with the splitter having a knuckleball like action ( very low spin rate ). He also pitched for Team Israel in the 2021 European Championship. In seven seasons of professional baseball he’s tossed 236 innings with 271 K’s and 132 walks with an overall ERA of 3.62. Sounds like a young man that if he can harness the command has good velocity and movement on his fastball and a specialty pitch in his splitter that can be an out maker.

On 11/6/21 the Phillies re-signed RHP Tyler Phillips. He had been claimed on waivers from the Rangers in July this past summer and pitched in four games with Reading. Phillips was designated for assignment on September 20th to clear a roster spot but the Phillies maintained an interest. He’s got a four pitch mix ( FB, Change, Curve, Slider ) and is generally known as a command hurler who gets a lot of ground balls. The fastball generally is in the 91-93 mph range but can touch mid nineties. He was suffering thru some injury issues when acquired this summer by the Phillies and didn’t get the chance to show his full repertoire. We saw him pitch twice, seems to have upside with the change up and the fastball moves relatively well. He also seems to know how to read hitters and induce soft contact. He’s been a starter most of his career and projects to continue in that path either with Reading or Lehigh Valley this coming season. Tyler is 24 years old and is 6’5”, 225 lbs - was the Rangers 16th round draft selection in the 2016 draft from Bishop Eustace Prep in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
