Pedro Leon is a 27 year old outfielder who made his major league debut in 2024 with the Astros appearing in seven games - he had posted big numbers at the AAA level (Sugar Land) that summer - .299/.372/.514 in 533 plate appearances with 25 doubles, 24 home runs, 90 RBI’s and 29 stolen bases. 2025 was an injury riddled season for him as he suffered a left MCL sprain in March, was sent on a rehab assignment to Sugar Land in May but returned to the IL in June. On 8/19 he was sent on rehab assignment again and finished the year in the minors. On 11/6 the Astros placed him on waivers and he was claimed by the Orioles. The Orioles placed him on waivers on 11/18 and the Phillies have now claimed him. (initially reported by Francys Romero).
MLB prospects list said this about him in 2024 : “León defected from Cuba, waited until December 2019 for MLB to declare him a free agent and quickly reached a deal with the Astros for $4 million that had to wait until the 2020-21 signing period to fit into their bonus pool. He officially signed in January 2021, receiving the largest bonus in that year's class and setting a franchise record for an international player, with the hope that he could replace departing free agent George Springer sooner rather than later. Three years later, he's still trying to turn one of the best toolsets in the system into consistent production.”
Leon is regarded as having a plus-plus arm as a right fielder and also for being a plus runner along with power. He has struck out quite often in his minor league career like a power bat usually does. Leon is highly rated for tools, if he can approach putting up numbers like he did at the AAA level in 2024 then the Phillies may have found a hidden gem. Time will tell.
From a fan’s view welcome to the Phillies Pedro!
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
