12/11/2020 : Winter League Roundup

Puerto Rico :

On Thursday, 12/10 twenty year old LHP Gabriel Cotto pitched 1 2/3 scoreless inning for RA12 against Criolles de Caguas. Cotto struck out one batter, walked three and yielded no hits against the eight batters he faced. The 6’5” hurler was drafted in the 7th round of the 2018 draft by the Phillies out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy.

In the 12/9 game for RA12 against the Criolles nineteen year old outfielder Jadiel Sancheztripled in four AB’s. Jadiel played right field in the contest, he was the Phillies 12th round selection of the 2019 draft from the Escuela Natividad Rodriquez Gonzalez High School in Arroyo, Puerto Rico.

I’ve had the pleasure to meet both young men and their parents at Carpenter Complex. Two good young talents to keep watch for.

Dominican :

Ramon Rosso pitched five strong innings today ( 12/11 ) vs Tigres del Licey yielding 2 runs on 1 hit and 2 walks. Ramon struck out 9 batters in his outing giving him 29 K’s in 24 IP ( 6 games ) with 8 hits allowed and 5 walks. Ramon’s ERA stands at 1.13.

RHP Johan Quezada pitched a scoreless inning today ( 12/11 ) for Toros del Este allowing one hit while striking out one batter. Yasiel Puig made his debut for the Toros.

Mexico :

LHP Erubiel Armenta pitched a perfect inning on 12/9 against Aguilas de Mexicali striking out two batters. The 20 year old signed with the Phillies in July of 2019 and now has appeared in ten games for Caneros de Los Mochis posting a 2.25 ERA in 12 IP with 12 K’s and 8 BB. He’s yielded six hits. Erubiel is from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

RHP Fernando Lozano has a 1.84 ERA in 9 games ( 14.2 IP ) and a 3-0 record for Aguilas de Mexicali. The 20 year old signed with the Phillies on 4/25/19. He’s from Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

Venezuela :

Daniel Brito is getting some time at third base for Aguilas del Zulia. The 22 year old infielder has been a lineup regular for Aguilas normally at second base. He signed with the Phillies in July of 2014 and is likely slated for AA Reading in 2021. We’ve had the pleasure of watching him play for a few years now, outstanding fielder ... in fact a Minor League Gold Glove winner !

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
