The Phillies have signed free agent catcher Christian Bethancourt to a minor league contract with an invitation to 2021 big league Spring Training. Bethancourt was in 2020 big league ST with the Phillies as well. He’s currently playing for Estrellas de Oriente in the Dominican Winter League.
Christian is 29 years old and has played in the major leagues as both a catcher and a pitcher. He spent parts of four seasons from 2013 to 2016 with the Braves and Padres as a catcher and switched to pitching in 2017 ... primarily played at the AAA level that season but did make four appearances as a hurler for the big league Padres. He’s got a power arm ... upper nineties capabilities.
He will be trying to latch on as a catcher with the Phillies. In 2020 camp he was certainly turning some heads with his performance. From a fans view welcome back to the Phillies Christian !
