A look at the clubs who had the first overall pick in each of the drafts since the 2008 Phillies championship season.
Some general notes :
From 2009 to 2016 :
Five of the eight First Selection ( 1-1 ) picks have had All-Star level careers or better to date ( Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Correa, Dansby Swanson ).
Nineteen percent ( 49/252 ) of the players drafted and also signed by the teams selecting at the top of each round have played in the major leagues. The Phillies in comparison signed 234 of their draft pick selections from 2009 to 2016 - 37 have reached the major leagues - that’s 16 percent.
Fourteen percent ( 36/252 ) of the players drafted and also signed by the teams selecting at the top of each round have played in 50 games or more in the major leagues. The Phillies in comparison have had 20 of their 234 signed draftees play in 50 or more big league games - that’s 9 percent.
Nineteen percent ( 48/252 ) of the players drafted and also signed by the teams selecting at the top of each round are still active in affiliated pro ball as players - only 8 of those 48 players ( 3 % of drafted & signed ) remained with the club that drafted them during the 2021 season - 4 of those 8 are Astros however 1 ( Kent Emanuel ) has now moved to another organization, the Phillies. In comparison 44 of the Phillies 234 drafted and signed players are still active in affiliated baseball as players - that’s 18 % - 20 remain in the Phillies organization - that’s 8 % of their signed draftees for the eight drafts.
From 2017 to 2021 :
Five of the 67 drafted and signed players from the top of each round in the 2017 and 2018 drafts have reached the majors, only one has played in 50 or more major league games ( outfielder Brent Rooker of the Twins ). Comparatively the Phillies have nine players from their 2017 and 2018 draft classes that have reached the major leagues and three ( Adam Haseley, Connor Brogdon & Alec Bohm ) who have played in 50 or more big league games.
It’s far too early to judge the 2019 to 2021 classes in regards to major league experiences, in fact no players drafted at the top of each round has advanced to the show yet. Same goes for the Phillies selections in those draft years.
