It’s often said that a draft class can’t truly be evaluated until the fifth season thereafter. That time line puts the 2017 draft class in the spotlight this year as 2022 will be the fifth full season after the draft was conducted.
The Twins had the number one pick in the 2017 draft and chose shortstop Royce Lewis - he’s now 22 years old. Lewis missed the 2021 season due to ACL surgery but he participated in their Fall Instructs and is seemingly back to full speed. He’s expected to participate in big league spring training with the likelihood he begins the season at the AAA level - a major league debut on the plate if things go well. The second overall selection in the draft, P Hunter Greene of the Reds, has also battled the injury bug - he had Tommy John surgery in 2019 but has re-emerged and is seemingly on the cusp of making his big league debut in 2022.

P Connor Brogdon ( 10th round ) of the Phillies amongst them. He’s earned and solidified a role in the bullpen as a back end option. P Trevor Rogers ( Marlins 1st round pick ) made the NL all-star team in 2021 and posted a very solid 2.64 ERA in 25 starts ( 133 IP ). P Garrett Whitlock ( Yankees 18th round selection ) was selected by the Red Sox in the 2020 Rule 5 draft and appeared in 46 games last season recording a strong 1.96 ERA. P Josh Fleming ( 5th round ) of the Rays made 26 appearances and threw 104 1/3 innings. P Tanner Houck ( 1st round ) of the Red Sox has pitched 86 innings in 21 games with a 2.93 ERA. P James Karinchak ( 9th round ) made his major league debut in 2019 with the Guardians and has pitched in 92 games including 60 in 2021 with a cumulative 3.49 ERA in 87 2/3 IP.
1B/OF Pavin Smith ( 1st round ) and OF/C Daulton Varsho ( 2nd round ) were afforded opportunities and became lineup regulars for the rebuilding Diamondbacks as did 2B Josh Rojas ( drafted by the Astros - 26th round ). Chas McCormick ( 21st round ) played in the World Series for the Astros,so did P Kyle Wright ( 1st round ) of the Braves albeit Wright made just a cameo appearance during the regular season, McCormick played in 108 games ( 14 HR, 50 RBIs ).
