Minor League Mini-Camp Activities :
A 2 PM four and one half inning intra squad scrimmage game concluded the workout after fielding, base running and hitting practice preceded in earlier hours. Five pitchers threw side bullpens before the scrimmage - Alex McFarlane, Gunner Mayer, Hans Crouse, Brett Schulze & Jordan Fowler.
Pitchers who threw an frame each in the scrimmage game were Tyler Phillips, Jaydenn Estanista, Chase Antle, Nathan Karaffa & Spencer Van Scoyoc. Eduar Segovia went two innings.
My Observations :
RH Tyler Phillips was really strong in his outing - retired three batters in order quickly ( two groundouts, 1K ) - stayed on the mound to face a fourth batter to get in the work, Nick Ward singled to right field. Phillips has the look of a pitcher who’s ready to make his mark on the upper levels of the system after spending last summer working at the Complex in recovery from TJ surgery. He had really good life on the fastball today and off speed deliveries were sharp - he’s a pitcher who could be in the mix for a big league call up at some point this summer, just sayin - has the goods.
RH Jaydenn Estanista ( 21 yrs old ) tossed a perfect inning ( 1 K ) - he focused primarily on off speed deliveries during his outing, Jaydenn struggled with control earlier in the week during a live BP session with his FB - good to see both an adjustment today to regaining the strike zone but also using secondary pitches as a way to reel it in - the 21 year old year old from Curaçao is on the WBC roster of the Netherlands and is part of a strong group of young pitchers from the 2021 Dominican Summer League season that are very talented ( includes Estibenzon Jimenez, Eiberson Castellano, Guissepe Velasquez & Jean Cabrera ) and should be on your radar .
RH Eduar Segovia went two frames and retired five of the six batters he faced - 3 K’s, 1 BB - first frame was rolled as Anthony Quirion worked a pro plate appearance to draw a walk and elevated Eduar’s pitch count. Segovia is another pitcher who spent the entirety of 2022 at the complex rehabbing from prior surgery - he’s got a Jake Arrieta cross fire delivery and can pump up the heat in the mid nineties - flashes higher - secondaries were decent today as well - we like him a lot and see big things ahead for the 22 year old.
RH Chase Antle continued his return today from the rehab group by throwing a perfect frame posting two strikeouts - used his curve ball as a punch out pitch for one K and let the heater eat for a called third strike on the other - good work.
Other notes - both Spencer Van Scoyoc & Nathan Karrafa showed big break on their secondaries but each struggled with command and control a bit today. Erick Brito produced the only run of the scrimmage with an RBI single to center field that scored Jordan Dissin ( walked and stole second base ). Chad Castillo sliced a single down the left field line - he, Brito and Nick Ward had the only hits of the scrimmage - Anthony Quirion worked two walks, Jordan Dissin, Wendell Rijo & Gavin Tonkel each walked once.
Leonardo Rondon played third base in the contest - the 18 year old is being groomed as a catcher but has the versatility to play infield as well.
Coach of the day - Zac Jones - just because of the energy he brings - gotta love it ⚾️.

Major League Camp Activities :
Six pitchers threw live BP on the stadium field - Zack Wheeler ( up-down simulated two innings ), Craig Kimbrel, Jose Alvarado, Seranthony Dominguez, Mick Abel & Billy Sullivan.
Pitchers dominated the outing - Wheeler was Wheeler - the others didn’t yield much either - in fact the only hit I remember was a single to right field by JT Realmuto. I thought Mick Abel threw the ball well - used his slider to get strikes on the edges and had plenty of juice on the heater.
