2/26/24 : Today in Spring Training

Updated: Feb 27

Minor League Mini Camp :

Bullpens :

Max Lazar, Christian McGowan, Enrique Segura, Trey Dillard, Jaydenn Estanista, Efrain Contreras, Cam Brown, Luke Russo and Brandon Beckel each threw today.

I watched Brandon Beckel’s session - it was on Roberts field.  He’s got a slider that he keeps down in the zone, looks like a pitch that’s heavy and a ground ball maker, has decent pop on the heater as well.

Live BP :

Andrew Baker, Taylor Lehman, Jean Cabrera, Andrew Walling and Ethan Chenault threw on Roberts field.

Andrew Baker is throwing the baseball really well, in command with both his fastball and slider.  Less movement in the delivery - I think it’s going to be a big year for the very likable young man.

Jean Cabrera showed a running fastball in an up down two frame session - broke three bats.  The slightly built right hander gets a great amount of torque on his deliveries.

Grapefruit League Game Three :

Red Sox 7 Phillies 6

Fort Myers, Florida

Boston scored single runs in the first and second innings.  Whit Merrified hit a two run home run for the Phillies in the third inning off the left field foul pole to tie the score.  Boston scored another run in the third inning.

Aramis Garcia walked in the fifth inning, stole second base and scored on a single by Cal Stevenson.

In the sixth inning Darick Hall smoked a long home run to right field.  Edmundo Sosa walked and scored on a home run over the center field wall by Aramis Garcia.

Boston plated two runs in the 8th inning on a walk, double and two singles.   Noah Skirrow began the 8th inning and recorded two outs, he was taken out with runners on first and third - Tristan Garnett came in to end the inning.

The game announcers said that Skirrow re-entered the game in the 9th inning - he walked the first hitter he faced and then hit the second batter.   Andrew Schultz replaced him - two singles scored the game tying run and left the bases loaded.  A 5-2-3 double play followed on a ground ball to third.  A wild pitch then scored the game winner for Boston.

At the Plate :  5 Hits & 6 walks

Aramis Garcia was 1 for 2 with a two run home run and a walk.  Whit Merrified hit a two run home run.  Darrick Hall hit a solo tater.  Carlos De La Cruz had two solid AB’s - he lined a single to left and sent a deep fly ball that was caught against the wall in left field.

Defensive Gems :

Third baseman Trevor Schwecke made a diving stop on a hard hit grounder in the sixth inning, his throw to first was low but first baseman Bryce Ball dug it out to end the frame.  Shortstop Erick Brito made a nifty stop going down on one knee in the seventh on a grounder up the middle inclusive of a spin and throw to first base to record an out.

Pitching Notes :

RH David Buchanan started - 2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s
