Minor League Mini Camp :
Bullpens :
Micah Ottenbreit, Wilmer Blanco, Alexis De La Cruz, Robinson Pina, Jonathan Petit, Mavis Graves and Casey Steward each threw.
Live BP :
Sam Aldegheri, Tommy McCollum, Estibenzon Jimenez and Jordi Martinez each threw. Jimenez and Aldegheri did up-down two inning sessions.
Tommy McCollum had a great outing in my view, fastball had a lot of zip - his motion looks so easy, it’s deceptive as the heater gets on the batter quickly. His release also comes on a downward plane, coupled with a patented splitter he’s a really tough AB. A whole lot of half swings and swings and misses today. That being said Aidan Miller had a terrific AB against him, worked a 3-2 count by laying off some knee bending breaking pitches and then lined a fastball to center for a single - good stuff all around!
Edmundo Sosa and Johan Rojas were the live BP hitters against both Aldegheri and Jimenez on Ashburn field. The left-handed Aldegheri had another strong session - pumped the zone with quality strikes and good velocity. Really like what I’ve seen from him in training camp thus far. Jimenez also had another very good outing, showed a glove side slider that enticed both hitters to chase it - neither had a lot of success doing so. “Jimmy” has legit stuff in this observer’s view.
One thing should be made clear - this is training camp - practice sessions and games - whether players succeed or fail in the daily sessions it’s just one day of the process of camp - what truly matters is the position they are in when camp breaks. I think many fans tend to over react to what they see in one AB, one outing or one game - I’ve learned long ago watching backfield baseball that it’s the collective continuous work that matters - not the singular performances. Just sayin.
