2/28/24 : Today in Spring Training

Updated: Feb 28

Minor League Mini Camp :

Bullpens :

Noah Skirrow, Andrew Schultz and Saul Teran threw.

Live BP :

Zach Haake, Chuck King, Matt Osterberg, George Klassen, Jake Eddington and Gunner Mayer each threw.  Haake and Osterberg each threw two inning up-down sessions.

Emaarion Boyd hit the longest ball I’ve seen him square up today - drove a fastball from King over the left center field score board on Roberts Field!  😳.  Hendry Mendez went yard to right field.

Both King and Klassen are high velo guys - location was an issue today for both but the stuff is evident.  Klassen mixed in a nice off speed hook that he threw for called strikes.  When he lets it fly it’s very difficult to square.

Grapefruit League Game Five :

Phillies 7 Braves 7

Clearwater, Florida

JT Realmuto homered in the first inning to left field. Bryce Harper singled and Alex Bohm scored him with a long home run to left field.

Atlanta scored twice in the second inning on a home run by Chadwick Tromp.  They added single runs in the third and fourth innings - one on a long home run to right field that cleared the stadium by Michael Harris.

Whit Merrifield doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth, he advanced to third when Johan Rojas performed the textbook AB by rolling a sharp ground ball to the right side.  Rojas reached on an error by the second baseman, he then stole second - went to third on a throwing error and scored on a single by Aramis Garcia.

In the sixth inning Kody Clemens walked and went to third on a single by Rodolfo Castro.  Aramis Garcia singled to score Clemens.  Cody Roberts singled to load the bases.  A walk to Robert Moore scored a run.

Atlanta scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning (two on a home run by Bryson Horne) to tie the score prompting some of the Braves fans in attendance to do the tomahawk chop 😁.

At the Plate : 7 R, 11 H, 5 BB

Alec Bohm was 2 for 3 with a double and home run, he had two RBIs.  Aramis Garcia was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a walk. Whit Merrifield doubled and JT Realmuto homered.

Defensive Gems :

In the fourth inning center fielder Johan Rojas ran down a deep fly ball in left center field from his original spot shading to right center that most do not even touch let alone catch!  Incredible defender!

Bryce Harper made two strong defensive plays at first base on grounders - one was a 3–6 double play with a runner on first base where he tagged first base initially and threw to shortstop Weston Wilson at second base who applied the tag on the base runner trying to advance from first.

Robert Moore (nickname is Bobby Baseball) made three really good defensive plays at second base - two on ground outs and another in the 8th inning when with two outs and runners on first and third the runner at first attempted to steal - the throw to second from the catcher was low and late but Moore dug it out, pivoted and got the runner at third base who was leaning home!  The young man is a heady player who just gets after it, very intelligent and cognizant of what’s going on around him - Good stuff!
