2/4/25 : Today at the Complex - Winter HP Camp - Day Seventeen

Twenty one High Performance Camp pitchers were on the seven mounds this morning throwing side bullpens - participants included Angel Liranzo, Danyony Pulido, Griff McGarry, Luis Avila, Camron Hill, Ryan Degges, Marcus Morgan, Marty Gair, Enrique Segura, Zack Tukis, Ethan Chenault, Kevin Warunek, AJ Wilson, Eli Trop, Titan Hayes, Erik Ritchie, Kyler Carmack, Cody Stashak, Ryan Dromboski, Daniel Harper and Jaydenn Estanista.
Batting Practice :
BP took place on Roberts Field - I know I sound like a broken record but once again was very impressed with Griffin Burkholder in his session - just has great form, a pure clean RH swing - ball jumps off his bat. Brady Day showed the ability to drive the baseball the other way - he drew some oohs and ah’s on an inside out swing that lined a pitch down the left field line (he’s a lefty hitter). Gabriel Rincones Jr had a good session - easy power to all fields. Aroon Escobar is another who continues to impress - really strong young man, quick bat and majestic drives high into the sky off his bat. Gotta like the approach and lefty swing of Carson DeMartini as well - just looks and swings like a professional hitter. Otto Kemp can flat out hit - just tellin ya once more - he’s a big league bat.
Fielding Drills :
Infield/Outfield work on Ashburn Field - catchers did their drills with a pitching machine in the seven mounds area. The enthusiasm of coaches in these drills gets the players amped and makes practice less mechanical - outfield coordinator Andy Abad brings big energy to his drills, has and displays a true passion for the game and teaching it. Good stuff.
Scouts Honor :
The Phillies amateur scouting staff are here this week for meetings - it’s always fun to chat with them when I can. Here’s a scouting quip for ya I learned today that may bring a smile - what do ya call a fastball pitcher who’s got heat - “Little Ceasar’s” cause he’s hot and ready 😂.
Big League Early Work :
Multiple side bullpens were thrown on the half field side mounds in front of the stadium. Those that I saw throw included : Tyler Phillips, Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm, Mick Abel, Joel Kuhnel, Seth Johnson and Jordan Romano.
A chat with JT :
JT Realmuto was walking past me while I was sitting by Ashburn Field and I introduced myself to him. Thanked him for helping to bring championship baseball back to the Phillies at the major league level - he seems like a nice young man and responded that Philly is a great place to play. I very rarely interact with the major leaguers that haven’t come up thru the Phillies system but had a chance to do so today with one of the key components of the club - good stuff.
