Championship Series : Perth vs Adelaide
The Adelaide Giants made history as they claimed their first League Championship in their 43 year history winning the Claxton Shield!
Game One : Perth 9 Adelaide 5
Adelaide’s Nick Ward went 3 for 4 with a walk and scored a run. Rixon Wingrove had two hits in five at bats. Anthony Quirion doubled and posted two RBI’s. LH Jordan Fowler started and pitched 3 2/3 innings ( 5 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 K’s - 73 pitches - 47 strikes ), RH Starlyn Castillo pitched 2 1/3 innings ( 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s - 49 pitches - 30 strikes ). LH Josh Tols retired the only two hitters he faced.
Former Phillies minor leaguer Tim Kennelly went 3 for 5 with a double, 2 RBIs and scored two runs for Perth. The 36 year old center fielder played in the Phillies system from 2005 to 2012 before being released in 2013 - he played for Williamsport, Clearwater, Lakewood, Reading and Lehigh Valley.
Game Two : Adelaide 9 Perth 2
Jordan McCardle ( a Phillies Spring Training invitee in 2020 ) hit two home runs and drove in four runs to lead Adelaide to a series tying victory. The Giants hit five home runs in the game including one by Jared Carr who also walked and scored twice. Adelaide held Perth to five hits - former Phillies minor league RHP Austin Ross threw a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts and former Phillies minor league RHP Bubby Rossman pitched a scoreless 8th frame ( 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K ) as five Adelaide hurlers combined for the win.
Game Three : Adelaide 5 Perth 2
Jordan McCardle hit a two run home run and Jared Carr posted an RBI double. RHP Austin Ross threw two scoreless frames in relief ( 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s ) using a swing and miss curve ball as his out pitch. Rixon Wingrove doubled down the right field line to score Anthony Quirion ( singled ) from first base in the bottom of the 8th inning - Wingrove later scored on a double by Quincy Latimore.
Venezuela Winter League :
The Leones defeated the Tiburones 7 to 6 in an eleven inning thriller on 1/30 to win the league championship series 4 games to 2.
Harold Castro hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the 11th for the win.
Carribean Series :
RHP Carlos Francisco and IF Vimael Machin were named to the Puerto Rico team for the Caribbean Series ( 2/2 to 2/10 ). Also on the Puerto Rico roster are former Phillies minor leaguers OF Danny Ortiz & IF Jesmuel Valentin. Former Phillies minor league infielder Ali Castillo and RHP Ricardo Pinto are on the Team Venezuela roster. RHP Victor Vargas is on the Team Colombia roster. Former Phillies minor leaguer RHP Harold Arauz is on the Team Panama roster.
Ali Castillo went 3 for 3 with 2 walks - scored a run and knocked in two for Team Venezuela in their opening game against Team Panama on Thursday, February 2nd. RHP Harold Arauz pitched six innings for Panama on 2/3 in their 6-5 win over Colombia.
RHP Carlos Francisco pitched a perfect inning and struck out the side for Team Puerto Rico against Venezuela on 2/3 - former Phillies minor league outfielder Donny Ortiz was 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs for Puerto Rico in that game - a 6-1 Puerto Rico victory.
