2/5/24 : High Performance Camp - Day Twenty-One

The last week of HP Camp began today, they will break after Friday’s practice.

Today’s Camp Activities :

A rainy morning which forced batting practice sessions indoors however the weather cleared in time for to enable pitchers to get their work in outdoors.

Bullpen sessions on the seven mounds for Andrew Baker, Tyler McKay, Cristian Hernandez, Brett Schulze, Enrique Segura, Gunner Mayer, Tommy McCollum, Tristan Garnett, Jean Cabrera, Micah Ottenbreit, Mavis Graves, Jordi Martinez, Cam Brown, Jake Eddington, Casey Steward, George Klassen, Ethan Chenault, Luke Russo, Mitch Neunborn, Alex Rao, Andrew Walling and Wesley Moore.

Player Spotlight :

RHP Andrew Baker - 23 years old - drafted in eleventh round of the 2021 draft from Chipola Junior College, Chipola, FL

2023 Notes :   Features a fastball (95 to 99 mph, has reached 101 mph), hard slider and big break curve.  Had some struggles during the 2023 season at Reading but that’s a learning experience that in my view will make him much better.  We’ve never doubted that Andrew has big league talent, if you watch him throw that’s readily evident.  It’s a matter of commanding/controlling the zone, refining and sequencing pitches and repeating mechanics, from there the talent can shine.  He was selected to participate in the Arizona Fall League to continue to develop in all of those areas and comes into 2024 camp ready to compete for an upper level roster spot. The stuff definitely plays.  A good young man who’s both approachable and well liked.  Another one of my favorites 🤓.

Andrew’s reflections : “Takeaway from last season was to not hang my hat on bad things and good things. This offseason I’m going to fine-tune my mechanics.”

Major League Arrivals :

Three more players joined in voluntary workouts today that I saw, could have been more as the rain changed things.  Catchers Rafael Marchan and William Simoneit (non-roster invitee) are here as is RHP Jeff Hoffman.   They join pitchers Aaron Nolan, Tyler Phillips (non-roster invitee), Matt Strahm, Nick Nelson, Orion Kerkering and Jose Alvarado and catcher JT Realmuto as early arrivals.

Aaron Nolan threw a side bullpen session on the mounds between Ashburn and Schmidt fields with William Simoneit as the receiver.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
