3/15/23 : Today in Spring Training

Major League Camp :

Side Bullpens :

Three pitchers threw side sessions on the mound in the Montgomery Training Center pitching lab.  Pitchers who threw today - Bailey Falter, Seranthony Dominguez & Craig Kimbrel

Grapefruit League Action :

Phillies 9 ( 9-8-1 ) Yankees 8 ( 8-10 ) @ Tampa

Summary :

Even with a pitch timer when hurlers have problems throwing strikes games are elongated.  Such was the case today as a total of 21 walks between the two teams were issued along with three hit batters.  The Yankees and Phillies also combined for 17 hits and 25 strikeouts - the result was a 3 1/2 hour game.

The Phillies scored seven runs in the first inning on three singles, four walks, a double ( Brandon Marsh ) and a wild pitch.  Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino exited with one out in the inning, ( he returned for the second inning and ended up pitching 2 1/3 frames ), the Yankees needed three pitchers to complete the first inning.

Aaron Nola also exited in the first inning - he gave up a run on two doubles and actually struck out the side however Isiah Kiner-Falefa reached base on a wild pitch on the third strike, LH Jordi Martinez came in to replace Nola ( he had thrown 29 pitches ) and promptly struck out Aaron Hicks on three pitches, I’ve always like the potential of Martinez, lefty with power stuff.   Nola returned to the game in the second inning and pitched 3 2/3 innings in total.

The Yankees scored four runs in the 6th inning on five walks and two singles.  They took a one run lead with three runs in the 8th inning on two hit batters, a walk and two singles.

Madison Stokes tied the game for the Phillies with a 9th inning home run.  Leandro Pineda followed with a single and went to third on a double by Dalton Guthrie.  Jim Haley grounded out which scored Pineda.

RHP Braden Zarbnisky closed out the win with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

At the Plate : 9 H, 10 BB, 10 K’s

Josh Harrison was 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.  Brandon Marsh doubled and walked in four plate appearances and posted three RBIs. Dalton Guthrie was 1 for 2 with a double.  Madison Stokes homered in his only AB of the game.  Rhys Hoskins had two of the team’s ten walks.

Pitching : 7 pitchers - 8 earned runs, 11 BB, 2 HB, 15 K’s

Aaron Nola struck out seven batters in 3 2/3 IP ( 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB  - 78 pitches - 51 strikes ).  Gregory Soto yielded four runs on two hits and two walks in 2/3 IP - 24 pitches - 13 strikes.  Andrew Bellatti struck out the side in his one inning pitched yielding one hit ( 23 pitches - 15 strikes ).  Braden Zarbnisky pitched 1 1/3 innings and stranded two inherited runners, he gave up one single retiring four of the five batters he faced ( 18 pitches - 11 strikes ), Braden earned the win.

Minor League Spring Training :

Mental performance, defensive drills, batting, side bullpens, a live bullpen and weight training were the practice sessions of the day.  The majority of the practice schedule had to be altered due to rain in the morning hours however with the indoor facility and the shifting of practice times the players still got their work done.  There was a simulated game scheduled which was moved to tomorrow.

Side Bullpens :

Eleven pitchers threw side bullpen sessions on the seven mounds in front of the David Montgomery Training Center, pitchers who threw today - Sam Aldegheri, Tyler Phillips, Mick Abel, Yoniel Ramirez, Jean Cabrera, Nicoly Pina, Enrique Segura, Danny Wilkinson, Blake Brown, Drew Garrett & Micah Ottenbreit

My Notes :

First bullpen action for Micah Ottenbreit - limited to ten pitches and a short box session ( catcher is positioned on the plate ) - another step on his way back from missing all of last season 💪👏.

Live Bullpens :

One pitcher threw a live bullpen session on Roberts Field - Jonathan Hughes

Jonathan Hughes live BP today - Micah Yonamine batting - Andrik Nava catching

World Baseball Classic Notes :

RHP Taijuan Walker pitched four scoreless innings ( 1 H, 1 BB, 8 K’s - 63 pitches - 40 strikes ) for Team Mexico in their 2-1 win over Team Great Britain.

LHP Jose Alvarado pitched a scoreless inning ( 1 H, 2 K’s - 14 pitches - 10 strikes ) for Team Venezuela in their 4-1 victory over Team Nicaragua.

1B Rixon Wingrove was 2 for 3 with a walk, home run and three RBIs for Team Australia in their 4-3 loss to Team Cuba.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
