3/16/24 : Today in Spring Training


Minor League Camp :


On field fielding and the following scheduled events :

Spring Breakout Game :


Tigers 5 Phillies 1

Lakeland, FL


Justin Crawford hit a slow roller to third base and beat it out for an infield single to lead off the game.  He then stole second base and scored on a single to left field by Aidan Miller.


Jace Jung homered to right field for Detroit in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score.  A single, walk and two errors scored a run for the Tigers in the fourth inning.


Jace Jung hit his second home run of the game in the fifth inning.


Two walks and a double (Josh Crouch) scored two Tigers runs in the seventh.


At the Plate : 1 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 8 K’s


Justin Crawford had two hits (singles) and walked in four plate appearances.  Starlyn Caba, Aidan Miller and Tjayy Walton each singled.


Pitching Notes :


RH Mick Abel - 2 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 K’s - 31 pitches - 23 strikes - four seamer (94-96 mph), sinker, cutter, change up, slider

RH Michael Mercado - 2 IP, 1 UE R, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K’s - 44 pitches - 26 strikes - four seamer (94-97 mph), curve, cutter

RH Griff McGarry - 1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s - 21 pitches - 11 strikes - four seamer (94-96 mph), cutter, curve

LH Sam Aldegheri - 1 2/3 IP, 2 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 K, 36 pitches - 21 strikes - four seamer (93-95 mph), sinker, change-up, curve, slider

Other Notes :


Watched the MLB video stream but listened to Scott Franzke and Kevin Stocker on the radio broadcast.  Really good interviews with Assistant GM Preston Mattingly, game manager Marty Malloy (Threshers Manager), Minor League hitting coordinator Luke Murton and Minor League pitching coordinator Travis Herbert.  Very informative stuff about the players and the development process.

Grapefruit League Game Twenty-One :


Phillies 3 Marlins 3

Jupiter, Florida


Whit Merrifield singled in the first inning, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a single by Nick Castellanos.  Johan Rojas tripled in the second inning,  Kody Clemens and Brandon Marsh walked to load the bases, Whit Merrifield singled to score two runs.


Three singles and a ground out scored two Marlins runs in the fourth, a double, walk and single scored a run in the fifth.


At the Plate : 3 R, 8 H, 4 BB, 10 K’s


Johan Rojas was 2 for 3 (single & triple) as was Whit Merrifield (two singles, two RBIs).  David Dahl doubled.
