3/17/23 : Today in Spring Training

Major League Camp :

Side Bullpen :

Ranger Suarez threw a morning side session on the mound area by the Bowa half field.

Grapefruit League Action : two games - split squads

Phillies 4 ( 11-8-1 ) Blue Jays 2  ( 12 -8 ) @ Clearwater

Summary :

Rhys Hoskins homered to left field in the first inning to put the Phillies up 1-0.

Cam Eden tied the score with a third inning home run for Toronto.  Matt Chapman doubled for the Blue Jays in the 6th inning, pinch runner Tanner Morris advanced to third base on a ground out and then scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the 6th inning Cameron Cannon singled and scored on a long home run to right field by Gabriel Rincones Jr.  It was Gabriel’s first Grapefruit League hit of his very young career, drafted in the third round of the 2022 draft from Florida Atlantic University the 22 year old has yet to play in an official game as he spent last summer rehabbing a shoulder injury, now healthy he’s looking to make home runs a regular thing, we’ve seen a prominent power swing in practices on the backfields.

In the seventh inning Rhys Hoskins doubled, pinch runner Nick Podkul scored on a single by Nick Castellanos.

On the hill starter Bailey Falter was very good, he went five innings yielding just a run on three hits and a walk, threw 60 pitches - 39 for strikes.

At the Plate : 10 H, 1 BB, 5 K’s

Rhys Hoskins was 2 for 3 with a double and home run.   Dalton Guthrie & Aramis Garcia each doubled and Gabriel Rincones Jr homered.

In the doing the little things that matter category Dalton Guthrie made a really good read on a fly ball to left field that caused the outfielder to drift to the wall, Guthrie was on second base and tagged on the play - with his speed he easily got to third base.

I continue to be really impressed with 22 year old shortstop Pedro Martinez,  he had a single in his only AB today taking an outside pitch to right field, defensively he’s intuitive and takes charge, good looking player the Phillies took from the Rays system in the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft.

Pitching :

Bailey Falter - 5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K - 60 pitches - 39 strikes - strong outing

Connor Brogdon - 1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s - 14 pitches -6 strikes - the “hit” was a fly ball to left field the fielder lost in sun

Craig Kimbrel - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K - 17 pitches - 9 strikes

Seranthony Dominguez - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K - 20 pitches - 11 strikes

Ben Bowden - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s - 16 pitches - 12 strikes

Phillies 8 ( 12-8-1 ) Blue Jays 1 ( 12-9 ) @ Dunedin

Summary :

Brandon Marsh & Alec Bohm each drew walks in the first inning, Jake Cave doubled to score Marsh.  Josh Harrison hit a sacrifice fly to score Bohm.

Kody Clemens homered in the 4th inning to make it 3-0.  The Phillies then loaded the bases on a single and two walks, Brandon Marsh singled to score a run. Jake Cave singled to score two more.

In the 5th inning Scott Kingery singled and advanced to second on a walk to Josh Harrison.  Kody Clemens singled to score Kingery.  A walk loaded the bases, Max McDowell hit into a double play however a run scored.

The Blue Jays scored their lone run in the 6th inning on a sacrifice fly by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

At the Plate : 9 H, 7 BB, 10 K’s

Jake Cave was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.  Kody Clemens was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Josh Harrison doubled and walked in three plate appearances.

Pitching :

Matt Strahm - 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 K’s - 27 pitches - 18 strikes

Andrew Bellatti - 1 perfect IP - 1 K - 12 pitches - 7 strikes

Michael Plassmeyer - 4 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 K - 63 pitches - 40 strikes

Erich Uelmen - 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K’s - 22 pitches - 13 strikes

Cristian Hernandez - 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s - 12 pitches - 7 strikes

Minor League Spring Training :

Mental performance, defensive drills, batting, side bullpens and weight training were the practice sessions of the day.  There were also two eight inning simulated games.

Big news today was the arrival of RHP Wen Hui Pan to camp. The 20 year old flamethrower had been working at the Dominican Academy.  He was signed by the Phillies on 1/23/23 as an international free agent from Hualien, Taiwan.  We are anxious to see him throw, word is brings the heat in the upper nineties.

Side Bullpens :

Three pitchers threw side bullpen sessions on the seven mounds in front of the David Montgomery Training Center, pitchers who threw today - Matt Russell, Jace Vines & Ethan Lindow.

Live Bullpens :

Eight pitchers threw live bullpens on Ashburn and Roberts fields, pitchers who threw today - Albertus Barber, Colton Eastman, Starlyn Castillo, Gabriel Cotto, Rafael Marcano, Seth Nightingale, Ty Collins & Braeden Fausnaught

Notes :

Saw Albertus Barber & Starlyn Castillo throw on Ashburn Field.  Albertus retired all four batters he faced, one with a strikeout - had good movement on his pitches.   Starlyn battled control in his session however finished up strong with a strikeout, he’s got the stuff to climb the ladder, just needs to find consistency.

Two Simulated Games :

Roberts  Field :

Pitchers : Gunner Mayer ( 2 innings ), Alex McFarlane ( 2 innings ), Spencer Van Scoyoc, Tyler McKay, Orion Kerkering, Alex Rao, Billy Sullivan, Eduar Segovia, Gabriel Yanez, Sam Jacobsak, Fernando Lozano, Jonh Henriquez, Jared Wetherbee

Notes :

I was able to watch a little bit of the contest before heading to the stadium for the Grapefruit League game - saw Uziel Viloria lead off the game with a lined single and Jamari Baylor score him with a double to deep center field that the Secretary of Defense Johan Rojas almost ran down 💨.  Leandro Pineda then singled to score Baylor.

I was told that Johan Rojas, Jhailyn Ortiz and Leandro Pineda each hit home runs in the contest.  Pineda has the tools to be a good one - here’s a profile :

Leandro Pineda - 20 years old - Birthdate : 6/4/02 - signed as an international free agent - 7/6/18 - Valencia, Venezuela - This Fan’s View - played half of  the 2022 season as a teenager and held his own with Clearwater and Jersey Shore ( promoted 8/25/22 ).  Had a solid month of July posting a .278 batting average and .363 OBP with Clearwater in 79 AB’s.  Tied for second in the organization with seven triples - has good speed.  Left handed hitter and thrower - solid corner defender. Angular build - 6’1” frame - room for growth and strength - was in Fall Instructs and follow on Strength & Conditioning camp.  Just looks like a ball player - plays hard and does most things right - wants to improve, will work to do so.  2023 Spring Camp -  has appeared in a couple Grapefruit League games and is 1 for 2 at the dish.  On the backfields he’s done very well in practice - seems likely to be a starter in the opening day Jersey Shore outfield.

Ashburn Field :

Pitchers : Jordan Fowler ( 2 innings ), Mavis Graves, Zach Linginfelter, Jack Dallas, Zach Warren, Brett Schulze, Christopher Soriano, Rodolfo Sanchez, Eric Garcia, Mason Ronan, Wilson Valdez, Jonathan Petit & Carlos Betancourt.
