Larry Rojas and Bill Giles Awards :

Prior to today’s Grapefruit League game RHP Danyony Pulido and RHP Alex McFarlane were awarded the Larry Rojas and Bill Giles Awards as minor leaguers who’ve have outstanding Spring Training camps. The Rojas Award is presented each spring to a foreign player while the Giles Award goes to an American player. Both awards were initiated in 1999 and have been given annually with the exception of 2020. Last year’s award winners were catcher Alirio Ferrebus and IF/OF Otto Kemp.

Notes :

The Lehigh Valley team will break camp on Sunday and head north to Allentown - they open their season at home next Friday (3/27) against Toledo. The Phillies big league crew will break camp after their final Grapefruit League game on Monday.

The Clearwater, Jersey Shore and Reading contingents will remain here in Clearwater in Spring Training mode till 3/28 when all three will break camp to head to their season opening destinations (Reading and Clearwater open on 4/2, Jersey Shore on 4/3) - Extended Spring Training Camp (XST) will officially begin on 4/6 with eight XST games against opposing teams and lots of intra-squad contests on slate till that camp breaks on 5/1. The FCL season begins on 5/2 with the Phillies scheduled once again to play games against the Yankees, Tigers and Blue Jays thru 7/23.

My wife and I return north on 3/30 - this marks our 12th consecutive year of watching  Spring Training on a daily basis and for me posting notes each day on the website. I’ve met multiple new family members of the minor leaguers that I highlight in my coverage as is the case most every spring. It’s heartening to me to be greeted each year by fellow fans, returning players, their families and friends as well as coaches, administrators and front office folks. Hopefully everyone who’s read the daily recaps this year has found them informative and worthwhile.

At the end of each spring camp there’s a bit of time for me to reflect while anticipating what comes next on the schedule - whether to continue writing about and highlighting the Phillies player development process throughout another summer. That decision point is near once again - time to ponder the impact (if any) of continuing or not 🤷‍♂️🤔.  At the least we will finish out spring camp.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
