3/22/22 : Today at the Complex

Apologies to folks seeking more minor league news than what’s below as I didn’t make it to the complex today. We have season tickets for the Phillies Grapefruit League games - when the big club is at home my time at the complex is limited. There were minor league games today but they are played at 1 PM - the same time the big league contest takes place.

Early Morning on the Half Field :

Coach Dickerson was back at work with today’s students being Bryson Stott and Nick Maton taking high hop grounders with instructions on how to approach them at third base and Yairo Munoz and Ronald Torreyes at second base - I believe every infielder works with the Coach each day - those just happen to be the ones I saw at 9 AM. Two pitchers threw bullpens on the side mounds while I was there - lefty JoJo Romero ( is on the 60 day DL - rehabbing from Tommy John surgery ) and righty Dillon Maples - he can definitely bring it 🔥.

Today’s Grapefruit League Game : Phillies 7 Tigers 2

Johan Camargo delivered a bases loaded double down the left field line in a four run sixth inning to put the game away for the Phillies. Camargo ( a switch hitter ) in his only AB was batting left handed and masterfully stroked the ball the other way. He played shortstop today ( has played both second and third base previously this spring ). Although his role is seemingly to be a versatile defender off the bench guy I have a suspicion that he could earn himself a larger role - particularly at third base where he’s a very capable both with the glove and the bat.

Second baseman Nick Maton had a good day going 3 for 3 with two doubles, the second double was a fly ball lost in the sun by the Tigers center fielder that fell in as he avoided getting klunked on the head 🥴. Darick Hall was a runner at first base on the play and to his credit he hustled all the way around the bags to score never assuming the ball would be caught - it’s the little things like that we “scouts” take note of. Darick had singled to reach base in a good piece of hitting lining an outside pitch to left field.

Starting Shortstop Bryson Stott drew two walks out of the lead off spot in three plate appearances - Maton made the defensive play of the game with a diving catch on a hard hit line drive.

Pitchers :

Bailey Falter, Jeurys Familia, Brad Hand, Seranthony Dominguez, Damon Jones, Kyle Dohy and Jeff Singer each threw scoreless frames. Dominguez dominated by striking out the side with a perfect frame - fastball sat 96 to 97 and his slider was nasty at 84 to 86 - a very encouraging outing ! Familia lit up the radar at 97 mph and had two K’s working out of a bases loaded jam with a punch out. Jones had good bite on his slider in a perfect inning with two K’s. Both Dohy and Singer faced only three batters as they coaxed double play ground balls after yielding a hit.

Notes :

After the game the Phillies optioned RHP Hans Crouse and C Rafael Marchán to minor league camp. Additionally, the club reassigned LHP Kyle Dohy and OF Johan Rojas to minor league camp.

To make room for newly signed OF Nick Castellanos on the 40 man roster UTL Luke Williams was designated for assignment. Luke is now eligible to be claimed by another organization and placed on their 40 man roster.

Notes from the Minor League games at the Complex :

Even though I wasn’t in attendance it doesn’t mean we didn’t have eyes 👀 on the action. Ron Miller was kind enough to provide some intel. The AA/AAA contingents played at home today against the Blue Jays.

OF Matt Kroon continues to smoke the baseball - a triple and home run in the AAA designated game. Jonathan Hennigan, Zach Warren and Erik Miller stood out as hurlers - each with very good outings.

The Blue Jays rolled multiple innings due to high pitch counts - our guys were working them. OF Hunter Markwardt made an outstanding catch up against the fence, he’s not shy of doing that - when he was at Williamsport in 2019 he did an Aaron Rowland and broke his nose crashing into the fence to make a catch - no fear 😧.

Catcher Karl Ellison threw out a would be base stealer at second base. Logan O’Hoppe and Jhailyn Ortiz were in the lineup today and UTL Dalton Guthrie returned to action after being temporarily sidelined with a lower back strain.

Gunner Mayer’s dad Aaron is in town and was at the complex this morning.

Thanks Ron for the information - perhaps you should take over this gig 😎 - the pay is light though 🤓.

As always Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️

Back at em tomorrow.
