3/24/21 : Grapefruit League Game Twenty-Three


Game Summary : Tigers 4 Phillies 1


Willi Castro singled to score Jeimer Candelario ( tripled ) for Detroit’s first run in the first inning.


The Phillies tied the score in the second inning as Luke Williams singled to score Odubel Herrera ( singled ).


Robbie Grossman hit a long home run over the right field wall for the Tigers second run in the third inning. Miguel Cabrera hit an RBI single to score Detroit’s third run.


Wilson Ramos doubled in the Tigers fourth run in the sixth inning.


On The Hill :


Ivan Nova ( FB 90-93 ) went five plus innings, he faced one batter in the sixth inning. Nova was charged with four runs on ten hits ( that’s a lot 😳) but no walks. He struck out one batter and threw 63 pitches - 43 for strikes.


Jo Jo Romero ( FB 94-96 ) allowed an inherited runner to score on a double in the sixth inning. He pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing two hits and struck out two batters.


Hector Rondon struck out the only batter he faced in the seventh inning, three pitches - all sliders.


Sam Coonrad ( FB 97-99 ) continues to impress, he tossed a perfect 8th inning with one strikeout.


At The Plate :


Darick Hall singled and doubled in four at bats, he also scalded the ball in his first AB that was fielded by first baseman Miguel Cabrera.


Center Field Battle :


Scott Kingery singled and walked in four plate appearances. Odubel Herrera singled and was robbed of a second hit on a diving play by Nikko Goodrum on a hard hit ball into the second base shift in four AB’s. Adam Haseley went 0 for 3.


Defensive Gems :


Matt Joyce made a diving catch in right field.


Phil-Ins :


Mini Camp players on the roster today included pitchers Julian Garcia, Jakob Hernandez, David Paulino and Zach Warren, Catcher Logan O’Hoppe, Infielders Luis Garcia, Darick Hall, Luke Williams and Bryson Stott and Outfielders Odubel Herrera, Matt Vierling and Johan Rojas.


Before the game catcher Jeff Mathis asked for and was granted his release.


Grapefruit League record is now 10-12-1

Phillies are back at BayCare Ballpark tomorrow against the Yankees ... 6:05 PM game time
