Met some more family members of players yesterday and today - Nick Lackney’s uncle and cousin are in town from Wisconsin and we got to chat with them a bit at the complex this morning. On Wednesday we met Gavin Tonkel’s parents in town from California. Always nice to meet the families of the young men we follow and write about. Our friends from Michigan, the Stone family, were also at the complex this morning, their last vacation day before heading home. Shout out to outstanding photographer Cheryl Pursell who was here this week and to Lehigh Valley Iron Pig super fan Rick Feliciano who was also in town for the week.
Today’s Grapefruit League Game : Phillies 6 Yankees 5
Things ya only see in Spring Training :
Both of today’s starting pitchers exited twice from the contest - in what appeared to be a very tight strike zone Kyle Gibson and Luis Severino both ran into first inning trouble. Gibson was pulled with two outs in the inning but re-entered the game to start the second - he went into the third inning before being pulled again. Severino also exited with two outs in the first inning, re-entered in the second frame and pitched to one batter in the third before being pulled again. Both starters need to build up the innings which is why it was done - things ya only see in spring training 🤓.
The Offense :
Good days for Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm and Matt Vierling. Stott had two singles and a walk in three plate appearances. Bohm doubled and walked in three appearances and Vierling doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three runs. Matt smoked an “at ‘em” ball in one of his other AB’s - certainly is making a strong impression.
OF Ethan Wilson got his first Grapefruit League hit in the seventh inning - a single that drove in a run, C Edgar Cabral singled in the same inning with what turned out to be the game winner.
Defense :
3B Alec Bohm made a good catch on a hard liner, he also made an on the run snag on a slow grounder that first baseman Darick Hall dug his throw across the diamond out of the dirt for a fine play all around. Later in the game SS Yairo Munoz made a fine play on a ground ball that jumped on him, his throw to first was dug out by Josh Ockimey in another web gem at both ends.
RF Bryce Harper threw a laser to home plate to nab a runner trying to score on a single in the third inning - perfect execution - hose worthy play as Mr Salisbury says 🤓
