The Phillies have signed 29 year old infielder Sergio Alcantara to a minor league contract and assigned him to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs roster. He was recently released (3/24/26) by the Washington Nationals after signing with them on 1/28/26.
Alcantara has played in 193 major league games with the Tigers, Cubs, Padres, Diamondbacks and Giants. He was originally signed by the Diamondbacks on 7/12/12 from the Dominican Republic as an international free agent. Last season he played at the AAA level in the Pacific Coast League for both the Giants and D’Backs organizations (signed with Giants 11/18/24, elected free agency 7/18/25 and re-signed with Arizona). He posted a combined .251/.368/.341 slash line in 441 plate appearances and played defensively at second base, third base and short-stop however mostly at SS appearing in 100 games there. He’s a career .260/.355/.343 hitter in 990 minor league games accumulating 4,050 plate appearances from 2013 to 2025.
Alcantara is noted as a strong defensive shortstop with a plus arm and excellent baseball instincts. Is also a switch hitter.
From a fan’s view welcome to the Phillies Sergio!
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
