3/31/22 : Today in Spring Training

The minor leaguers squared off in two 10 AM scrimmages this morning on Carlton and Roberts fields. The wind was gusting strong outwards so not a good day to be on the mound. Just about any ball in the air to the outfield had a great chance of carrying very far. There were multiple extra base hits including home runs on both fields. We didn’t see them all so can only list those we witnessed before heading up to the stadium for the afternoon Grapefruit League game.

Roberts Field :

Johan Rojas made a nice diving stab of a low liner off the bat of Alec Bohm in center field to rob a hit. Alec batted each inning against both teams. We saw Jorge Bonifacio hit a two run double and newly acquired Will Toffey with a couple knocks. John Andreoli and Scott Kingery hit back to back dingers later in the contest.

Hans Crouse threw well going three frames as did Noah Skirrow. Ben Brown was popping the radar in the 94-96 range in his two frames.

Carlton Field :

We saw home runs hit in the contest by Yhoswar Garcia, Rixon Wingrove, Arturo DeFreitas, Nicolas Torres and Karl Ellison. Doubles were hit by Felix Reyes, Leandro Pineda and Randy Vasquez.

The Reading and Lehigh Valley initial teams fly out tomorrow as they will face off against each other in Allentown on Sunday. Rosters were posted internally, publicly we will have to wait till they are announced by the affiliates. Select players will remain in Clearwater to backfill for the remaining major league Grapefruit League games and fly north after big league camp concludes on the 6th. There are a few surprises I’m sure on the roster makeups.

Grapefruit League Game : Phillies 5 Yankees 3

Home runs by Jean Segura and Bryce Harper. Mickey Moniak and Bryson Stott each doubled. Stott played third base and was 2 for 2 at the plate with a run scored. Zach Eflin impressed with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless and hitless pitching.

Competition for roster spots continue per the skipper, Alec Bohm will start at third base tomorrow.

Scheduled game tomorrow is in Sarasota against the Orioles.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
