3/6/23 : Today in Spring Training

Minor League Mini Camp/Pitchers & Catchers ST :

Infielders and Outfielders from mini camp were given the day off - the balance of minor league position players reported today - first full minor league ST workouts tomorrow.   There were practice activities for pitchers and catchers.

Side Bullpens :

Fifteen pitchers threw side bullpen sessions on the seven mounds in front of the David Montgomery Training Center, some threw their sessions on the new state of the art pitching lab mound inside the training center - Albertus Barber, Colton Eastman, Carlos Francisco, Alex Garbrick, Sam Jacobsak, Jack Dallas, Jonathan Hughes, Jared Wetherbee,  Gabriel Yanez, Chase Webster, Carlos Betancourt, Braden Zarbnisky, Max Kuhns, Seth Nightengale & Braeden Fausnaught .

My Observations :

RH Sam Jacobsak can spin the baseball - impressive outing especially being his first time on a dirt mound this year, deceptive vertical movement on breaking pitches, good command and both movement and pop on the express.  First time I’ve seen RH Max Kuhns, ( signed 2/8/23 as minor league free agent - pitched in this year’s Mexican Winter League - 2021 & 2022 in the independent American Association League with Sioux City ), he comes from a three quarter slot but gets full arm extension ( see photo below ) - good movement/pop and showed a hard slider to boot - good stuff.  RH Alex Garbrick had a strong session, has big arm capabilities in regards to bringing the heat but also showed a sharp breaking ball - consistently hit his spots.  RH Albertus Barber had good lift on the express - change up was offsetting that well with downward movement and slice - got after it as he always does.

Simulated Two Inning Game :

Pitchers :  Cristian Hernandez, Rodolfo Sanchez & Jakob Hernandez

Catchers : Nick Matera & Andrik Nava

Hitters : Jordan Dissin, Herbert Iser, Anthony Quirion, Caleb Ricketts & Gustavo Sosa

My Observations :

RH Cristian Hernandez was dominant - faced five batters and retired them all - struck out the last three hitters he faced - mixed pitches well but also flashed swing and miss heat - can tell he’s oozing with confidence and results reflect that.  LH Jakob Hernandez retired four of the five batters he faced - walked one and struck out one - had the big overhand form and threw some knee buckling slurves - just like we saw him do back in 2017 when he was pitching in the Gulf Coast League.   Anthony Quirion homered in three AB’s - Herbert Iser singled and walked in three plate appearances.

Major League Camp :

Side Bullpens :

Aaron Nola, Mick Abel & Taijuan Walker threw early morning sessions on the side mounds by Bowa Field.  Rafael Marchan & John Hicks were the catchers.

Mick Abel

Live Bullpen :

Nick Nelson threw a session on Roberts Field. Leonardo Rondon caught him - Jim Haley & Kody Clemens were the hitters - Haley homered in his first AB.

Grapefruit League Action :

Orioles 10 ( 4-5 ) Phillies 7 ( 5-5-1 )@ Sarasota

Summary :

Alec Bohm doubled to score the game’s first run in the third inning.  The Orioles plated three in the fourth inning on a three run home run by Austin Hayes.

Alec Bohm led off the sixth inning with a long home run to center field, Darick Hall went back to back with another long ball over the right field wall.  With two outs in the inning Scott Kingery singled, he scored on a home run to left center field by Jake Cave.

Johan Rojas drove the first pitch of the 8th inning into the right center field gap and the speedster easily legged out a triple 💨.  He scored on a single by Pedro Martinez.  Martinez stole second base and then scored on a single by Vimael Machin.

Baltimore scored four runs in the bottom of the 8th inning on three singles and a two run home run by Colton Cowser.

The Orioles scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th on a Ryan O’Hearn walk-off home run to left center field.

At the Plate : 11 H, 3 BB, 6 K’s

Alex Bohm was 2 for 3 with a double and home run - two RBIs.  Darick Hall was also 2 for 3 ( single & HR ).  Jake Cave hit a two run home run.  Pedro Martinez went 2 for 2 with a couple of singles and an RBI.  Johan Rojas tripled.   Edmundo Sosa was hit by a pitch in the 4th inning on the elbow and left the game - later it was reported he’s ok - just sore.

Defense :

Second baseman Bryson Stott showed great range fielding a ground ball headed towards right center field and making a turn and one hop throw to first base where first baseman Darick Hall artfully picked it with a full extension - ended the inning 👏
