Minor League Camp :
Fielding and batting practice sessions along with side bullpens in the morning followed by live BP and an intra-squad scrimmage in the afternoon.
Side Bullpen sessions - Jayson Ruffcorn, Noah Skirrow, Tommy McCollum, Trey Dillard, Matt Russell, Jack Dallas, Eiberson Castellano, Hunter Loyd, Braydon Tucker, Jose Peña Jr
Live BP’s - right handers Gunner Mayer & Daniel Harper - Gunner continues to throw well, he’s been here since January’s High Performance Camp - we wrote about him then that he has added muscle weight to his frame - his always lively fastball has gained both steam and command, coupled with some new off-speed pitches he seems poised to have a potential breakout year. Harper has a crisp fastball - it hops - if can be consistent with command it’s an out maker. During the sessions infielder Trent Farquhar lined a single to left center field and IF/OF Pierce Bennett lined a single to left field.
Intra-squad Scrimmage : three and one half innings on Roberts Field
The first intra-squad scrimmage of camp drew a decent crowd. Speedy Emaarion Boyd led off against lefty David Parkinson and dropped a perfectly deadened bunt down the third base line on the first pitch, he easily beat it out for a hit. Maary then proceeded to steal second base and scored when another speedster Justin Crawford forced an error on a chopper down the first base line that Parkinson fielded but flipped over his first baseman’s head.
Right hander Cam Brown was dominant in the bottom of the first inning - in fact he faced two additional batters to get his count in - retired all five hitters he faced with three ground outs and two strikeouts. He’s got a very live heater with strong velocity and a sharp breaking slider - Cam has really impressed from High Performance Camp onwards.
In the top of the second Kehden Hettiger lined a double to left field that sent Hendry Mendez (singled) scampering from first base in an attempt to score however he was thrown out at the plate by some strong relay throws (that’s why they practice em 🤓). Parkinson pitched well going two full innings plus an extra batter (out) to get his full pitch count in - he yielded just one run on three hits while striking out one batter.
RH Efrain Contreras threw an inning, a lot of off speed breaking pitches - he yielded one hit and struck out one in a scoreless frame - Caleb Ricketts tripled against him on a hard hit shot over center fielder Justin Crawford’s head.
Emaarion Boyd beat out what appeared to be a routine ground ball to shortstop for a hit in the third inning, shortstop Devin Saltiban had a slight hesitation on the play and that’s all Maary needed to beat the throw. Justin Crawford smoked a ball to left center field launching it into the air on a line - the race was on as Boyd glided around the bags to score and Crawford drew oohs and aahs from the crowd with his gazelle like speed as he went to third for a triple standing. Aidan Miller drew a walk and both he and Crawford scored on a hard lined double to left center by Leandro Pineda.
Right hander Alex Rao threw a scoreless fourth inning.
