4/16/23 : Minor League Roundup


International League ( AAA ) -  Durham 4 (8-6) Lehigh Valley 3 (5-9)

Durham, NC - Athletic Park


Summary :


Osleivas Basabe doubled to score Ruben Cardenas (HBP) in the third inning for Durham.


Vito Friscia homered in the top of the sixth inning.


Scott Kingery singled in the seventh inning, moved to second on a single by Simon Muzziotti and scored on a single by Dustin Peterson.  Muzziotti went to third on Peterson’s hit and later scored on a balk.


Durham won the game in the ninth inning on a single, double and four walks.  The game tying and winning runs scored on walks.


On the Hill :


Christopher Sanchez went 4 2/3 innings allowing one run on three hits and two walks, he struck out five batters. Sanchez was 91 to 94 mph with his sinker and also threw a slider and change up.  Jeremy Walker went 1 1/3 retiring all four batters he faced, three by strikeout.  Jake Jewell and Jesus Cruz each pitched scoreless innings.


At the Bat :


Vito Friscia homered.



Eastern League ( AA) -  Reading 7 (2-7) Hartford 1 (5-4)

Reading, PA - First Energy Stadium


Summary :


Carlos De La Cruz homered in the third inning.


Madison Stokes doubled in the fourth inning and scored on a home run by Johan Rojas.


Colin Simpson homered for Hartford in the fifth inning.


Oliver Dunn tripled to score Johan Rojas (walked) in the seventh inning.  Dunn scored on a sac fly by McCarthy Tatum.


Cody Roberts walked in the eighth inning, advanced to second on a Madison Stokes single and scored on an error by Hartford’s shortstop. Johan Rojas singled to score Stokes.


On the Hill :


David Parkinson pitched 4 1/3 frames as the starter, he threw a total of 9 1/3 innings during the week allowing three runs on six hits and four walks while striking out seven batters.  Brett Schulze pitched 1 2/3 scoreless frames posting four strikeouts.  Keylan Killgore pitched a scoreless frame and Tyler McKay pitched two scoreless innings to close out the win.


At the Bat :


Madison Stokes had three hits (two singles & double). Johan Rojas (single & HR), Oliver Dunn (double & triple) and McCarthy Tatum (single,double) each had two hits.  Carlos De La Cruz homered.  Matt Kroon singled and walked twice in four plate appearances.



South Atlantic League ( High A ) - Greensboro 5 (7-2) Jersey Shore 2 ( 2-7)

Lakewood, NJ - ShoreTown Ballpark


Summary :


Casey Martin doubled in the second inning and scored on a single by Wilfredo Flores.


Greensboro scored a run in the fourth on a walk, hit batter, error and RBI single byJackson Glenn.


Casey Martin hit a home run on a 0-2 pitch onto the left field berm in the bottom of the fourth inning, had a tremendous AB fouling off five pitches before hitting the dinger.


Luke Brown doubled for Greensboro in the 6th inning to plate a run, he scored on a single by Ernny Ordonez.


Greensboro loaded the bases in the ninth on two walks and a single,  Tsung-Che Cheng plated two with a single.


Defensive Gem :


Left fielder Jared Carr made an outstanding catch to rob a home run from Jackson Glenn in the second inning.


On the Hill :


Gabriel Cotto pitched five good innings allowing just one run, he struck out five batters.  Rodolfo Sanchez pitched two perfect innings in relief striking out five batters.


At the Bat :


Arturo De Freitas went 3 for 4 (singles), Casey Martin had two hits (double & HR).  Marcus Lee Sang, Wilfredo Flores and Rixon Wingrove each hit two singles.


Notes :


Hao Yu Lee was ejected from the game in the sixth inning by the first base umpire.



Florida State League ( Low A )  Fort Myers 5 (5-4) Clearwater 0 (5-4)

Clearwater, FL - BayCare Ballpark


Summary :


Fort Myers scored three in the second inning, one on a home run by Carlos Aguiar and two on on home run by Andrew Cossetti.

They added a run in the third on a bases loaded walk.


Carlos Aguiar hit his second home run of the game in the eighth inning.


Defensive Gem :


Center fielder Emaarion Boyd caught a fly ball in deep left center and threw to second base in the third inning to nail a runner attempting to tag and move up from first base to end the inning, it negated a run as the play occurred before a runner from third who had also tagged up crossed the plate - good stuff.


On the Hill :


Braeden Fausnaught had a bout of wildness to start but then settled in to pitch four effective innings as the bulk reliever.


At the Bat :


Gabriel Rincones Jr singled and walked twice in four plate appearances.  The Threshers were held to three hits, all singles.
