4/2/22 : Phillies Sign LHP Ricardo Sanchez to minor league contract

Ricardo is a 24 year old from Venezuela who appeared in the major leagues with the St Louis Cardinals in 2020 for three games. He was originally signed by the LA Angels in 2013, traded to the Braves in 2015, to the Mariners in 2018 and claimed on waivers by the Cardinals in 2020.

He pitched in 111 minor league games ( 106 as a starter ) thru the 2019 season. Underwent Tommy John surgery in September of 2020 and didn’t pitch last season. When he’s healthy he’s been noted for a solid fastball, quality curve and changeup. His pitches have been touted for great movement but he’s historically struggled with command and control.

The fastball is generally in the 90-93 range but has touched 96 mph. With the lower range he gets late movement and sink. The curve ball is his out pitch - big break and movement. A comparable projectable hurler would be Gio Gonzalez however thus far Ricardo has lacked the command and control to truly excel. He’s noted for quality raw stuff - maybe the Phillies staff can unleash it.

Sanchez will be part of the starting rotation with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Welcome to the Phillies !
