4/23/23 : Minor League Roundup


International League ( AAA ) - Lehigh Valley (9-11) Worcester (8-12)- Doubleheader (seven innings)


Allentown,PA - Coca-Cola Park


Game One : Lehigh Valley 5 Worcester 4


Summary :


David Hamilton homered for Worcester to lead off the game.  The WooSox loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, a run scored on a single by Niko Goodrum.  A third run scored on a double play ground out.  What was originally ruled a catch by left fielder Simon Muzziotti to end the inning on a low liner was overturned by the umpires in a group meeting, thus an RBI single by Greg Allen instead to score a fourth run, the Iron Pigs returned to the diamond and the inning ended on a ground out.


In the second inning a fielding error and single (Jhailyn Ortiz) put runners on first and third, Simon Muzziotti  beat the relay throw on a 4-6-3 double play attempt which allowed a run to score.  Jim Haley was hit by a pitch, Jordan Qsar doubled to score two runs.


Esteban Quiroz doubled in the sixth inning and scored on a double by John Hicks.  Vimael Machín walked, Hicks tagged and went to third on a long fly to left field by Jhailyn Ortiz.  Simon Muzziotti singled to score Hicks.


On the Hill :


Hans Crouse pitched two scoreless frames in relief allowing just two walks while striking out three batters.  Francisco Morales closed, 94 to 96 mph with his sinker.


At the Bat :


Jordan Qsar, Jim Hicks, Jim Haley and Esteban Quiroz each doubled.  Qsar and Simon Muzziotti each had two RBIs.



Game Two : Lehigh Valley 9 Worcester 3


Summary :


Esteban Quiroz walked in the first inning, stole second and scored on a single by Vimael Machín.


Jordan Qsar hit a two run home run in the second inning scoring Dalton Guthrie (singled) ahead of him.


Weston Wilson walked in the fourth inning, advanced on a single by Simon Muzziotti and scored on a ground out.


Worcester scored three runs in the fourth inning on two walks, a hit batter and two singles.


Vimael Machín singled to score Esteban Quiroz (walked) in the fifth inning.


Dalton Guthrie tripled in the sixth inning scoring Weston Wilson and Simon Muzziotti who each singled. Jordan Qsar singled to score Guthrie. Vito Friscia singled to score Qsar.


On the Hill :


McKinley Moore pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, Jakob Hernandez pitched a scoreless frame in the sixth inning. Jesus Cruz finished it with a scoreless seventh inning.


At the Bat :


Dalton Guthrie went 3 for 4 (single, double, triple) with two RBIs.  Vimael Machín, Jordan Qsar and Simon Muzziotti each had two hits.  Jordan Qsar homered.




Eastern League ( AA) - Portland 6 (11-4) Reading 1 (4-11)

Portland, ME - Hadlock Field


Summary :


Edwin Diaz homered for Portland in the third inning.  Ceddanne Rafaela doubled in the fourth inning, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.


Max McDowell and Cam Cannon walked in the fifth inning, McDowell scored on a single by Oliver Dunn.


Portland scored four runs in the 8th inning on a single, walk an RBI single (Stephen Scott) and a two run triple by Tyler McDonough.  A ground out scored McDonough.


On the Hill :


David Parkinson went 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks, he struck out eight hitters. Braden Zarbnisky went 1 1/3 scoreless, Andrew Schultz threw a scoreless 8th inning.


At the Bat :


Just five hits today, all singles.



South Atlantic League ( High A ) -  Jersey Shore 8 (6-8) Aberdeen 5 (5-9)

Aberdeen, MD - Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium


Summary :


Nick Ward walked to lead off the game, advanced to second on a single by Marcus Lee Sang and scored on a single by Rixon Wingrove.  Wilfredo Flores singled to score Lee Sang.


Max Wagner hit a two run home run for Aberdeen in the bottom of the first inning.


Leandro Pineda hit a two run home run in the third inning.


Aberdeen scored a run in the 5th on a hit batter, walk, ground out and wild pitch.


Jud Fabian hit a two run home run for Aberdeen in the seventh inning.


Wilfredo Flores walked in the 8th, went to second on a single by Jared Carr and scored on a single by Nick Ward.


Rixon Wingrove walked and Casey Martin was hit by a pitch - the IronBirds manager and pitcher were ejected.  Wilfredo Flores singled to score pinch runner Troy Schreffler.  Andrik Nava walked, Jared Carr singled to plate two runs.


On the Hill :


Carlos Betancourt pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, Jason Ruffcorn and Carlos Francisco combined for a scoreless eighth inning.  Tommy McCollum pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to seal the win.


At the Bat :


Wilfredo Flores, Jared Carr, Marcus Lee Sang, Rixon Wingrove and Nick Ward each had two hits.  Leandro Pineda homered.



Florida State League ( Low A ) Clearwater 12 (9-6) Tampa 3 (6-9)

Tampa,FL - George M. Steinbrenner Field


Summary :


Ben Rortvedt (on major league rehab assignment) doubled for Tampa in the first inning, he scored on a single by Anthony Hall.


The Threshers loaded the bases on walks in the second inning, a run scored on a walk to Cade Fergus.  Erick Brito walked to score a second run.  Ricardo Rosario was hit by a pitch to score another.  Caleb Ricketts doubled to score two more.  Rosario scored on a wild pitch, Ricketts scored on a groundout by Jordan Viars.


Tensions erupted in the top of the third when the Yankees pitcher Alex Bustamante hit Erick Brito with a pitch, the benches cleared - Threshers manager Marty Malloy was ejected as was Tarpons pitching coach Gerardo Casadiego. Multiple players on both sides were ejected, just not listed on Boxscore.


When play resumed Brito advanced to second on a single by Ricardo Rosario and scored on a single by Caleb Ricketts.


Ben Rortvedt doubled in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a single by Daury Arias.


The Threshers loaded the bases in the fourth inning on a walk, single (Cole Moore) and a hit batter.  Erick Brito singled to score two runs.


Cole Moore hit a two run single in the 7th inning scoring Kendall Simmons (walked) and Otto Kemp (reached on an error).


Tampa scored a run in the ninth inning on a single and two fielding errors.


On the Hill :


Braeden Fausnaught went four innings as the starter yielding two runs on four hits and two walks, he struck out four batters. Josh Bortka, Seth Nightingale, Andrew Walling and Jack Dallas each pitched a scoreless frame.  Wesley Moore closed it with two strikeouts in the ninth, an unearned run scored.


At the Bat :


Caleb Ricketts was 3 for 6 (two singles & double) with three RBIs. Erick Brito had two singles, walked and was hit by a pitch, he had three RBIs. Ricardo Rosario singled, walked twice and was hit by a pitch reaching base in four of his six plate appearances.  Cole Moore was 2 for 3 (singles) with two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Jordan Viars doubled.  Kendall Simmons walked twice.  Four Thresher batters were hit by pitches and they walked ten times, twelve hits as well.
