4/24/23 : Minor League Roundup

All of the affiliated clubs were off today putting the spotlight on the extended spring training game at the complex.

Player Development Center Training - Carpenter Complex

Two pitchers threw side bullpen sessions on the pitching lab mound, pitchers who threw today - Estibenzon Jimenez and Enrique Segura.

Extended Spring Training Game vs Blue Jays @ Carpenter Complex :

Phillies 4 Blue Jays 2

Felix (El Gato) Reyes hit a long home run in the first inning to plate two runs.  I’ve always been impressed with the big fella’s power, this year the athleticism is also shining thru as he’s playing shortstop in the games thus far and is doing it quite well!

Drew Ellis hit a two run home run in the third inning.

The Phillies were limited to three hits in the game, the third was a single by Yhoswar Garcia who also stole a base. They walked seven times in the contest.

Daniel Mejia pitched the first two innings (no hits, 2 walks, 2 K’s), he allowed no runs.  Mason Ronan pitched two scoreless frames (one hit, 0 BB, 2 K’s).  Jose Acuna yielded two runs in two thirds inning of work (two hits, 3 walks, 1 K, inning rolled). Danny Wilkinson pitched two scoreless innings (two hits, 1 BB, 4 K’s) . Christopher Soriano tossed a scoreless eighth inning (two hits, 0 BB, 2 K’s).  Nathan Karaffa tossed a perfect ninth inning (one K).

System Transactions :

OF Ismael Perez was released.  IF Marco Soto and OF Jorge Garcia were transferred to Player Development Center from the Dominican Training Center.

Minor League Rule Five Contributors :

This past December the Phillies selected seven players in the minor league portion of the rule five draft.  It was an atypical move by the club in regards to the volume of selections.  Here’s a look at how the players chosen have impacted the 2023 minor league season to date. The Phillies selected the following players :

Infielder Pedro Martinez - chosen from Rays - 22 years old - from Venezuela - played at the low A level in 2022 - originally signed with the Cubs in the 2017-2018 international signing period.  Known for an outstanding attitude and a good balanced swing - he’s a switch hitter with decent bat to ball skills. Was traded to the Rays in 2020.  Where he’s now playing :  Pedro has been a part of the middle infield rotation for AA level Reading appearing in 11 of the 14 games played, he’s played both second base and shortstop.  What we’ve especially noticed is his passion to play, first evidenced in spring training in Grapefruit League appearances, he’s a take charge player who’s not shy about pushing his teammates as well as applauding their efforts.

RHP Yoniel Ramirez - chosen from the Giants - 21 years old -  from Dominican Republic - pitched in the Arizona Complex League and Low A level in 2022.  He’s noted for a live fastball and a sweeping slider from a low 3/4 arm slot. Where he’s now playing :  Is part of the Threshers bullpen at the Low A level - has appeared in three games, all multi innings, held opponents scoreless in two of the three.

RHP Zach Lingenfelter - chosen from Angels - 25 years old - was Angels 9th round draft selection in 2019 from the University of Tennessee - pitched as a reliever at the AA level in 2022.  Noted for imposing size (6’5”) and raw stuff, can run the heater into the high nineties, has a cross fire delivery.  Issues have been command.  Where he’s now playing :  He is part of the AA level Reading bullpen crew, has appeared in three games (three and two thirds IP) and has not allowed a hit or run posting two walks and five strikeouts.

INF Cameron Cannon - chosen from Red Sox - 25 years old - was Boston’s 2nd round draft selection in 2019 from the University of Arizona - played at the double and triple A level in 2022 after missing time from May to July with an oblique injury, is noted as an aggressive hitter who attacks fastballs in particular. Where he’s now playing : is part of the AA level Reading middle infield rotation, is hitting .257 in 35 AB’s, is coming off a particularly strong week where he was on base 8 times in 21 PA’s (.380 OBP) with six hits and two walks, had two doubles and a three hit game on Friday.

RHP Trey Cobb - chosen from the Mets - 28 years old - was Mets 8th round draft selection in the 2017 draft from Oklahoma State.  He pitched for AAA Syracuse in 2022.  He’s a  sinker-slider-changeup reliever, we were particularly impressed with the movement on his pitches this spring when we watched his bullpens, comes from a side winder’s arm slot and gets sweeping action on his pitches, change up had the look of a knuckler in lack of rotation. Did very well in Grapefruit League action. Where he’s now playing : is part of the AAA level Lehigh Valley bullpen - has made seven appearances, had one rough outing but in his other six games (five IP) he’s posted a 1.80 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.

Catcher Cody Roberts - chosen from the Orioles - 26 years old - was Baltimore’s 11th round draft selection in the 2018 draft from the University of North Carolina - played primarily for AA level Bowie in 2022.  He’s known as an excellent defensive receiver with a plus throwing arm and above-average athleticism.  Where he’s now playing : he’s primary in the three man catching corps for AA level Reading, has impressed with his defensive skills and leadership.  Has appeared in seven games to date.

Infielder Oliver Dunn - chosen from the Yankees - 25 years old - was Yankees 11th round draft selection in the 2019 draft from the University of Utah. Spent a good part of the 2022 season on the IL with a hamstring issue - played in 36 games - mostly at AA level Somerset.  He’s known for his makeup and grinder mentality, has solid bat-to-ball skills and a short swing - is a plus runner, has played primarily second base but also has seen time at third base and left field. Where he’s now playing : is coming off a very strong week for AA level Reading posting a .391 OBP (nine for twenty three) with five hits including three in Friday’s game and four walks. For the season he has a .414 OBP and .320 batting average in 58 plate appearances, 50 AB’s.  He’s played second primarily but has also played third and left field.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
