4/25/23 : Minor League Roundup

International League ( AAA ) -  Lehigh Valley 6 (10-11) Jacksonville 2 (10-10)

Jacksonville, FL - 121 Financial Park

Summary : 11 AM game

Jim Haley singled in the third inning, moved to second on a single by Esteban Quiroz and to third when Weston Wilson walked to load the bases. Jordan Qsar singled past a drawn in infield to score Haley.  John Hicks walked to score a run.  Vimael Machin hit a sac fly to score Wilson.  The Iron Pigs executed a double steal with Hicks stealing second and Qsar stealing home on the throw down to second to score the fourth run of the inning.

Jacksonville scored twice in the bottom of the third on a walk, hit batter and three singles.

Vimael Machin hit a home run in the sixth inning.

The Iron Pigs loaded the bases in the 7th inning on singles by Esteban Quiroz, Weston Wilson and John Hicks.  Vimael Machin walked to force in a run.

Defensive Gems :

Right fielder Jordan Qsar made a very nice over the shoulder catch on a fly ball headed towards the fence in the second inning, on the very next play left fielder Simon Muzziotti made an equally impressive running catch in the left center field gap, he covered a great deal of ground as he was positioned close to the left field line 💨.

On the Hill :

Noah Skirrow turned in workmanlike performance going five innings allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks, he struck out four batters. Noah battled thru multiple jams and kept Jacksonville at bay.  Jeremy Walker, Jake Jewell, Jeff Hoffman and Jesus Cruz each pitched a scoreless frame. The Iron Pigs bullpen has a scoreless inning streak of 14 innings going over their last four games.

At the Bat :

Esteban Quiroz went three for four (singles) out of the leadoff spot, he also walked and scored twice.  Vimael Machin had two hits (single & HR) plus a walk and three RBIs.

Eastern League ( AA) -  Reading 11 (5-11) Altoona 5 (7-8)

Reading, PA - First Energy Stadium

Summary :

An 11 AM game to start the week - in the first inning Liover Peguero walked for Altoona and scored on a double by Domingo Leyba.  Mason Martin doubled to score Leyba.

Matt Kroon reached on a fielding error in the fourth inning and scored on a home run by Ethan Wilson.  Cam Cannon and Madison Stokes each singled, they both scored on a three run home run by Max McDowell.  Pedro Martinez singled and scored on a double by Johan Rojas.  Reading sent ten batters to the plate in the inning.

Carlos De La Cruz singled in the fifth inning and scored on a double by Cam Cannon.

Reading loaded the bases against former Phillies minor league Braeden Ogle in the sixth inning on two walks and a hit batter. Cam Cannon smoked a grand slam home run into the pool in right field, a slam dunk!

Altoona scored a run in the eighth inning on two walks and a single.

Fabricio Macias hit a two run home run for Altoona in the ninth inning.

Defensive Gems :

Second baseman Cam Cannon made a really quick turn on a 6-4-3 double play in the fifth inning, really good footwork and release.

On the Hill :

After a shaky start to the contest Ethan Lindow settled into a groove retiring eleven of the last twelve batters he faced going six innings (by my recollection first hurler in the system to go six frames this season) yielding two runs on three hits and three walks striking out three batters.  Taylor Lehman, Cristian Hernandez and Andrew Baker finished it out with an inning of recorded outs for each.

Notes :

A rarity in today’s game - a knuckleball pitcher - Altoona’s Matt Eckleman featured the no spin speciality - he struck out three of the four batters he’s faced with the dancing ball approach.

At the Bat :

Cam Cannon had a day going 3 for 4 (single, double, HR) with five RBIs which included a grand slam.  Max McDowell hit a three run home run and Ethan Wilson hit a two run home run.  Madison Stokes had two singles, Johan Rojas doubled.

South Atlantic League ( High A ) -  Jersey Shore 7 (7-8)  Brooklyn 4 (5-10)

Lakewood, NJ - ShoreTown Ballpark

Summary :

Leandro Pineda hit an RBI single to score Nick Ward (walked) in the first inning.

Casey Martin walked in the second inning, stole second and scored on a single by Anthony Quirion.  Troy Schreffler reached base on a force out, stole second base and then scored on a single by Nick Ward.  Wilfredo Flores doubled to score Ward.

Stanley Consuegra hit a three run home run for Brooklyn in the third inning.

Brooklyn scored a run in the sixth inning on a walk, stolen base, passed ball and sac fly.

Rixon Wingrove doubled in the sixth inning, two walks then loaded the bases, Nick Ward drew a two out walk to score Wingrove. Wilfredo Flores singled to score a run.

Kendall Simmons doubled in the seventh inning and scored on a 2-3 groundout by Leandro Pineda where the throw put the first baseman in Pineda’s running path, they collided on the first base bag, Simmons was heads up and never stopped running rounding third to score on the play.

Marcus Lee Sang walked with two outs in the eighth inning, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Kendall Simmons.

On the Hill :

Matt Osterberg pitched five solid innings yielding three runs - two earned on five hits and no walks, he struck out three batters, had a good mix keeping the Brooklyn hitters off balance.  Chase Antle (one unearned run in 1 IP), Sam Jacobsak (perfect inning), Carlos Francisco ( no runs, one hit - 1 IP) and Matt Russell (two strikeouts - 1 IP) closed it out.

Web Gem :

Shortstop Casey Martin went deep into the hole to nab a grounder in the first inning and then made a jump throw to first base recoding the final out of the frame.   Third baseman Kendall Simmons made a diving catch on a soft liner in foul territory to end the fourth inning.

At the Bat :

Wilfredo Flores went 3 for 4 (two singles and a double), Kendall Simmons had two hits (single & double).  Rixon Wingrove doubled and walked twice.  Anthony Quirion and Nick Ward singled and walked twice.  Ward and Leandro Pineda each had two RBIs.

Florida State League ( Low A )  Clearwater 8 (10-6) St Lucie 5 (5-11)

Otto Kemp led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run.

The Threshers loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Justin Crawford and walks to Caleb Ricketts and Gabriel Rincones Jr.  Chad Castillo then reached on a throwing error by the St Lucie pitcher on which two runs scored.  Otto Kemp hit a sac fly to score another run.

In the sixth inning Ricardo Rosario walked and Justin Crawford reached on an error, they both scored on a double by Caleb Ricketts.

Jett Williams doubled to score a run for St Lucie in the seventh inning, the runner who scored had walked. Jacob Reimer singled to score Williams.

On the Hill :

Jonathan Petit started and went three innings yielding two runs on six hits.  Jonh Henriquez stretched out to three innings as the bulk reliever and once again delivered, one run allowed on one hit, three walks and striking out one batter.  Jack Dallas pitched a scoreless eighth inning.  Orion Kerkering closed it out with a perfect ninth inning.

At the Bat :

Caleb Ricketts had two hits (single & double) and three RBIs, he also walked once.  Justin Crawford had two knocks (single & double), stole a base and scored twice.  Jordan Viars had two singles, Otto Kemp homered and had two RBIs.  Gabriel Rincones Jr doubled.

Extended Spring Training Game vs Blue Jays @ Bobby Mattick Training Center, Dunedin, FL :

Phillies 9 (4-0-1) Blue Jays 7

The Phillies scored in four of the first five innings and never trailed in the contest.  Catcher Leonardo Rondon went 3 for 4 (two singles & a double), stole two bases, had an RBI and scored a run.  The nineteen year old is 6 for 9 in the extended spring games thus far, have said it before but I really like his skill set.  Matt Alifano went 2 for 2 (singles) with a walk and scored twice, he also had an RBI.  Yhoswar Garcia, Yemal Flores, Ezra Farmer and Lou Helmig each had doubles.  Flores had two RBIs.  Drew Ellis singled and walked twice in four plate appearances and scored two runs.   Jehisbert Sevilla singled and walked in four plate appearances, Jackie Pertuz had a single, the club collectively had 12 hits and walked 6 times.

Guissepe Velasquez was the starting pitcher (two IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s) followed by Jake McKenna (two scoreless innings, 0 H, 2 BB, 4 K’s), Malik Binns (one and 1/3 IP, 5 R -  3 earned, 2 H, 3 BB, 0 K’s) and Eric Garcia (one IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 0 K’s).
